This plant looks like it had spent its' time in at least some direct sun before coming into your possession. To keep the sharp contrast of the variegation and upright, perky habit of the leaves, the blinds may need to be opened, or the plant may need to be placed near another window where the sun can shine right on it for at least an hour per day.
