I believe that only the bread seed or opium poppy, papaver somniferum is used in this way.

Only the opium poppy is used to make drugs and you wouldn't get it in any package of seeds. It is too valuable to be sold to home gardeners

Papaver somniferum is the opium poppy and is available as any of a number of named varieties. I have Lauren's Grape. They are legal to grow as long as you don't grow acres of them and not "too valuable for home gardeners".

In any event they are not rare or valuable.

I think in most states it's legal to buy and grow Papaver somniferum, but some states restrict it. They are popular garden favorates for a lot of people. The growers of opium fields have bred new strains, specifically for the purpose of yielding higher amounts of the 3 compounds that are known as opiates. It is grown legally in other countries to be used by pharmaceutical companies.
