Help with dining room lighting

I'm looking to replace the ceiling fixtures in my house and I'd like to start with the dining room but I really need some help in choosing. For the record, the current fixtures came with the house. The fixture would be visible from the kitchen and living room and you would see it as soon as you enter my home. The room is roughly 13' X 9' with 8 ft ceilings and my dining table is 43 inches round. The current fixture is pretty centered in the room and provides more than sufficient lighting. The switch for the fixture is a dimmer switch but the light doesn't dim. I don't know if it's the fixture or the switch. It's a double switch that also controls the kitchen lights and those do dim.

Since my house is very small and I will eventually be replacing the 2 flush mount kitchen lights and the ceiling fan in my living room (you can see them in the pictures) I'm thinking that all the lighting needs to be related in some way. Or is that not that important? The topic is from the kitchen and the other is from the living room.

I put some lighting that I like in my dining room idea book but I really have no clue what would look good. I'm open to other suggestions also. I'm not a big fan of exposed bulbs or crystal.

Please help :)

Thanks
