Always! Then a few years later I end up having to move something, lol...but I like to change things up. I have to admit that I rarely pay any heed to tag recommendations when it suggests spacing...my bad.

i would tend to go to the library.. and look at actual clumps.. and try to gauge from that ...

its hard to space a plant that might end up 5 feet across ... so i would plant smaller ones around it .... that would be easily moved in a few years ... the larger the hosta... the greater the potential to set it back.. if you moved it ... so plant huge ones.. where they can stay forever ....

with TC.. many of the newest have never been grown out ... and the info on a tag .. is total speculation.. based on the parents of the plant.. if known ....

Great info, thanks! It was the big ones I was thinking about right now. Your idea, Ken, makes perfect sense. I have Sum & Substance, Atlantis, Sagae, and a few others that can say 70 inches wide.

I never rely totally on the label. The conditions I have may be different from where it was grown. Also, I don't want the yard to look empty while newer ones grow out. So like Josephine says, if I have to move something because others have gotten too big, I move it

I don't go by the label. You need to consider your growing conditions too. If you grow in sun, the hosta will grow faster than if they are planted in the shade. Also, is there tree root competition? That will certainly slow down your growth rate. I do agree that the larger the hosta size, the more thought should be given to its location. But even then, you have a couple of years before it has a big growth spurt if you change your mind and want to move it.
