What on Earth is this?

I hope The Logician or Rhizo are around. I am still trying to figure out what is in my garden and I have been given a lot of tips how to look things up. Like no missing segments? Might be sawfly larvae instead of a caterpillar. I don’t even know where to start here. Any ideas?

Female moth Orgyia leucostigma or similar (they are flightless) making an egg mass is my guess.

Mealybugs are small though, right? I would guess the real insect part was about 10mm.

TJ nailed it. Tussock moths are common in the south.

Thank you! So many weird things. There is another one today I am not sure how to start, but I will give it a few days of struggling before asking again. I really appreciate the help and don’t want to overuse it.

That’s ok. Not planning on touching them. The tree will be fine. Looking forward to see them grow.
