CHURCH PEW DILEMMA

last modified: last year

Hi guys:) I got my hands on a church pew from the church I went to as a child and was married in. The ideal location I would like to put it is in this bay window near my kitchen table. Pros...it is a perfect spot to sit and watch my kiddos in the backyard and watch the sunset. Cons...I feel like it might be too long for that area and possibly an oak overload with my oak hardwood floors and oak table. Looking forward to your opinions...

All I have done is the 12x12 spot on the side. Everyone seems to like the look. Need to order paint.

On another mid century note. This is the inspo pic that my twin sister has for her kitchen in her renovation house. She is asking what hard wood could she pair with this kitchen without it clashing or is a hardwood not an option in this case 🤷‍♀️

Kjoy this isn’t wood but the picture reminded me of this fabric pattern by Orla Kiely.

    White Oak or Terrazzo Tile

    The tile no question!

This is her sample of the tile. So small. Maybe for a bathroom but not for whole floor.

Nevermind she said the real size is 16x16. That was just a sample size.

    Perfect

I think the terrazzo tile is so much better. No worries about clashing wood tones and such a great mid-century look.

My parents had terrazzo in the kitchen in the 60's. It is hard on legs/back if she has any issues and anything breakable that falls on it will be history. Just an fyi.

It’s hard to get a good pic because this is on the far side of the fireplace and I am up against the wall…

I also picked up those two other pieces I liked at Hobby Lobby because they were 50 off

Plus this adorable scalloped shade lamp. Not sure if it fits in down here yet. But it is so cute I am sure I can find a home elsewhere

Where should I start looking for a mantle or should DH just build a hollow box one 🤷‍♀️

Wow the tiles took the paint really well!super cute lamp..the art will work really well for sure.

That lamp is so cute I think it looks fine there I think it's a perfect spot and your tile looks nice and the other tile you picked Alex nice you're just doing the sides I take it?

🤷‍♀️ with a hollow one it can be mounted with L brackets inside, with a solid you might need a double ended stud screw. I think that’s what they are called?

That tile is going to look great painted! I’ve got no advice to give on your mantle… I know nothing about how you’re going to attach it with the tile.

I wonder if you should paint some kind of primer on the smooth tile surface first before the good final paint to prevent having to touch up any possible future 'dings'? Someone at BM or SW would know. Or maybe you can try lightly scraping a spot on the test spot when it's dry to see if there could be an issue.

I too suggest just building a box mantle. If hubby is up for it.🙂

Amazing how that paint is covering the tile so evenly.

How are Maverick and Goose doing?

With a smooth glossy surface like that tile I would definitely be calling someplace like Benjamin Moore to find out what you need to prime it with.

I believe the paint kjoy uses (on her kitchen cabinets/vanities etc) is an all-in-one paint that includes primer.

I don’t think there will be a problem with the tile getting scuffed up. It should not get any wear and tear.

Looks like it’s sticking pretty good. I do know that the all in one paint and primer wall paint is for coverage. Going from a darker to lighter, has more clay. The furniture paint like KJoy is using is an all in one, but in most cases especially on a glossy surface , even though it says no priming necessary, might should prime first, I would suggest :). The separate primer first sticks to the glossy and then the paint, any paint sticks to the primer, giving a grab type application. It could scratch off but again, Kjoy has used it before on glossy, I think. Could be a good line of product with a bit of glue , for lack of better words, in the mix is how those work.

Yes I used it on a glossy surface…my bathroom countertop with no issues so far. High traffic use.

I would like to know what you used on your countertop Kjoy! I’m in the market for ours and love reliable references. Please and thank you 😆 you may have mentioned before?

Kjoy ditto… if you used paint on a countertop I’d like to hear about it. I have a situation where I have a damaged countertop by replacing it is not an option. I never thought of painting it. so please fill us in on the brand and the type. A photograph of the can would be great!

I’m prettysure this is what Kjoy uses.

I think they have a specific counter paint now but I may be mistaken.

I will look into it… Yes it would be good to have something designed for a counter and I don’t want any special effects paint. Stuff that supposed to look like granite etc. I don’t think they sell that all in one paint in Canada.

If you cannot find in Canada, Rustoleum counter top is very good. I took a class using this product presented by a Rustoleum rep many years ago. They sell a kit but you don’t need that. It’s very pricey bc it comes with all the bells and whistles such as glitter etc. can be tinted in many many colors. I will say though it has a strong smell until it dried bc it is a strong epoxy acrylic system in one. Dries in about two hours. SW bought this product line a while back, so any of their colors or colors they have dibs on which are many.
