Yours always look so fabulous - and our one looks so pathetic because the conditions where it grows are too dry and hot. Ours actually looks better this year than it usually does but nowhere near as good as yours look!

Very nice. My LL just has three silly blooms this year. ;o( One question... the second picture has a yellow tint on some of the blooms, near their centers. Is that true? Or is the camera messing with my mind? Or because I am drinking too much coffee lately? ;o)) Ha!

('luis', I dont think there is any yellow tint in "real life"...my phone camera isnt the best)

Thanks for this post! I have always wanted a small compact hydrangea in part sun. Would Bobo satisfy these requirements? What months and how long do yours bloom?

Hi Mark, the single BOBO in the first picture is in part sun and it is my best specimen. In my location BOBO are in good bloom from late July and hold their own into October.

Thanks Rouge! I will be looking to plant Bobo this fall. How wide is your Bobo. Got a nice place for it but there is a rose about 2.5 feet away. Would this be enough room or could I easily just prune the Bobo to fit this area?

Yours look great! Mine never looked like this -- if I would have stayed at my old house, I would have shovel pruned them, they got on my nerves.

    I spy Spigelia...ooooh… :0)

    I spy Spigelia..

Wow mxk3 you have an eagle eye! It is one of two established Spigelia's we have. (It is one of my favourite perennials).

Hi Mark. Untrimmed, it is my experience that a Bobo can attain 4 feet wide and almost as high. You could prune it in late winter or early spring to keep it closer to 3 feet but I think it might not look right or like it, being constrained to 2.5 feet.

But if it's 2.5 feet away on one side, it could grow to five feet wide, right?

I guess I misunderstood and so 2.5 times 2 is just fine.

I am planning to plant some Bobos in my front yard next year... your pics make me want to do so right now, lol. Thank you for sharing.

No such thing as too much when they add so much. And your Bobo surely adds

    For sure thank you rob333.

I do tend to go 'overboard' when I am impressed with the performance of a singleton plant in our garden. That might be okay when one has lots of space but our property is petite.

A perfect example for me is the Canadian "Campfire" rose. For sure an excellent rose but I planted *10* and they have grown larger than I had envisioned and now block from view many of the Bobos.

I’m planning to do either a Bobo hedge or little likes hedge. I like the colour of Bobo more but worried that it wouldn’t get big enough. How big are yours now and how long have you had them?

    Thanks in advance!

The oldest in the group is 5 seasons but 3 seasons years will bring one close to maturity ie 4 feet by 4 feet in good conditions.

    UPDATE (2 months later):

    Fall colour:

    last modified: 8 years ago

Looks much better than some offerings they had at a nursery. But those were Limelights and were turning green/brown, no pink. Enjoy!!! By when would you expect to see Fall foliage (yellow/etc leaves) in your area? October ish or are other shrubs starting to go dormant? We have had an incredible amount of rain so I am not sure how that will affect our Fall foliage display from trees/shrubs this year.

luis_pr, for my exact location, (of course depending on the weather), good Fall colour often happens around mid October.

These are just stunning! I recently purchased 3 bobo’s in 2G pots for only $5 a piece! I’m deciding whether to make a straight hedge or encircle another shrub such as burning bush or miss Kim lilac. Is their shape quite round and mounded around?

Well, this is the first year my Bobos have been at a mature size and I have been massively disappointed. I have had such unholy weather this year- no spring at all, then a couple of months of intense heat and drought, then a month now of extreme amounts of rain. My Bobo blooms browned out weeks ago so badly that I cut them all off- it was just too ugly to bear. Of all my paniculatas 'Pinky Winky' has held up the best- the Limelights are keeping good color but lots of rain droop going on over there. My 'Quickfire' was done and ugly a month ago, the 'Fire and Ice' never were pretty to begin with- I'm about to go all old school around here and just put Pinkys everywhere.

I'm almost glad the season is over so I can look forward to more normal weather and a better show next year.

Rouge - where are you located? They look gorgeous!

Yes I agree, they are just beautiful when they turn this pink colour.
I planted my 6 bobo’s last weekend for an 18ft curved hedge along our driveway entrance. Really hoping they look like yours rouge in a few years!

Gorgeous, well grown shrubs! I was looking for one of the dwarfs and bought a 'Little Lime' last year. I was very happy with it's first year growth and it is in a full sun bed. By the end of the season, there is a little edging issue on some of the foliage, but not a lot. They seem to have gotten enough water over the season. I liked it enough to buy another one. I saw the 'Bobo' at the nursery and they just didn't have one that looked in good shape and since I already had experience with the 'Little Lime', I thought 'bird in the hand'. [g].

I love the sturdy stems that hold the blooms up off the ground.

I wonder what conditions you are growing yours in? Half shade? And how much water do you think they need? I was thinking of adding more in the back, but then I have less sun and more tree roots.

prairiemoon, the picture shown 6 posts up from this one shows a border of BB that are located in full sun but the singleton seen in the first post of this thread is in half sun.

Thank you. :-). Rouge in the border of BB - do I see a few blooms that have dried and turned brown?

Yes, I see a few too on the right side. Normal for this time of the year. Either deadhead them now/soon or, if you prefer, after winter is over.

The ones you see are on two less mature plants. The established ones have very few brown blooms.

I have an oak leaf hydrangea that is all brown dead blooms, this time of year. It's in an area that is probably too dry due to Maple tree roots. I thought I kept up with it this year, but, I guess not enough.

I was just curious, on the Bobo's why there were both, the dry brown blooms and those that remained looking very good at the same time.

Oakleaf hydrangeas bloom earlier than paniculatas so their blooms brown out earlier too. Mine are always brown by this time too.

Good point, thanks. I'm liking the paniculatas more and more.

Great pics. I have a weird narrow bed alongside my front staircase (4.5' by 17') that I was considering filling with a hedge of dwarf paniculatas - I was feeling sold on Little Quick Fire, but now I'm thinking I should consider Bobo as well.
