We changed our plan when our house was being built from an open upstairs banister situation to a door at the top of the stairs and full walls. We're really glad we did. Now we can close off the upstairs and only heat or cool it when guests are present (our master is on the main floor.) And it's much more private for those who are upstairs. The door keeps the noise up there.
