It's a big sweet gum ball tree and has been around in the backyard for 25 years already. Couple of days ago it suddenly gave away a branch without wind or other external force.

I realized there's a hole and saw a lot of ants around it. The ants all went away when I go back to take the picture.

Any idea how serious the situation is? Should I buy some chemical to treat the tree?
