They are long because they were originally used as cut flowers to decorate inside of homes for looks and scent to keep things fresh. You can select ones that do not droop but almost all of the older ones will. Look for landscape of merit peonies if you do not want droop however they normally have less scent.

dont they touch the ground.. because the big bulbous flower head is too heavy for the green stalk ... i mean.. even if the stalk was shorter.. it would probably still fall over ...

are they really just blooming now in NS ... which i presume is nova scotia????

No offense taken. I was just illustrating the type of support that can be used. I’ve used the lightweight ones with good results and they tend to disappear into the foliage when it grows in. No offense but yours look like overkill. :o)

Helps also to avoid big, tall, old peonies with double (viz. heavy) flowers. Am also very happy with 'Dublin' the first patio peony (low, compact) planted in our garden.

As per GardenHo and Saypoint, am sure peony rings/ hoops and the like are the smart (efficient) way to support peonies, though I personally use green plastic-covered metal stakes and green twine, added as late as possible, to avoid detracting from lower earlier-blooming perennials. Still you'd never want to inflict such a pedantic approach on others.
