Help with the blah room

This is our family room where we spend a good amount of time and it’s so bleh!

The green couches need to go but unfortunately that’s not an option right now so I am trying to work with what I have. I just replaced the brown, blue, green, red rug in an attempt to lighten it up.

Does it need curtains? Are the ones I have on the hanger too much print? Is it the paint color? I recently posted asking about different lightbulbs because at night the Edgecomb Gray was getting yellow.

Is it hopeless unless we can get new couches?

Appreciate your help. This is all new to me!

Hmm I’m having a hard time capturing the color. What about one of these:

It is blah, because you have no personality in that room, no color, and nothing interesting. I dont know what your previous rug was, but, the one now, does nothing for the room, and neither do the drapes on a hanger. There are no colorful pillows on the couches, etc. Even if you had brand new couches, unless, you actually decorate the space, it will still be blah. You need to decide on a color scheme. Maybe pick a rug, with some color in it, and work from it, for wall art, pillows, and draperies. Lighting isnt all that great in there. You could use some table lamps, and a coffee table. I now see you have added a picture with a different rug, (assume that is the one you replaced?) and have a coffee table, and even a pillow and throw. I think the old rug actually looked better in your space than the new one you replaced it with.

I didn’t like the last rug because it was too dark and I want move away form that color scheme. What colors would you suggest?

Someone once told me my closet looked like whitehouse black market...as in I’m a bit scared of color!

One more angle with old setup but you can see the blue (Kentucky Haze) of the adjacent dining room.

Thank you for your response. I like the first one better but don’t love for this room. Although I think incorporating blue would be good?

Having a hard time capturing green in the photo. I think this is actually it online:

Not a pro, but I’ve worked with tight budgets! Because you may replace these sofas in the future, I would consider drapes in the colour of your rug background, a bone or off white, they could have texture. You might want the same window coverings in your dining room if they are not large rooms. Wondering if acid green/yellow and yellow/blues would work. Art with colour. Do you sew? I would consider sewing covers for the loose sofa back cushions to reduce some darkness, plus it’s easier to sit without a lot of smaller pillows added to both sofas to try to lighten the look. Larger table lamp in the blue/green to replace the floor lamp and an off white drum shade.
Is there a tv behind the mirror?

It isn't hopeless at all. I think if you got some colorful throw pillows and maybe a colorful print on the wall, it would brighten it up :)

Thank you! Appreciate the your time and he picture. I have a hard time imaging it in my head so that is helpful.

Yes the TV is behind the mirror. The doors on it open. It’s from the previous owners.

Also the rooms are small so will definitely consider that abor the curtains!

Thanks so much for taking to time to respond again! I understand but I also really do like the rug. In your opinion is there other ways to bring color in and keep the rug?

Keep the rug, but use some art to bring in some color and use some throw pillows in a color that coordinates with the art and the furniture to tie it all together.

So didn’t add as much color, and definitely could still use some tweaks but feel like I’m making some progress.
