Dark and rainy-usually means it can kill your white and make it drab, most of the time. White is best when it gets enough light. It won't lighten place by itself. So sometimes going with deeper, darker color can be better answer

But frankly, you won't know until you try a color in your space in your light..in several spots if possible..in daytime, and artificial lighting. Make samples on paper so you can move them around.

Maybe a white can work, after all-I wouldn't go too stark though. Or go deeper off white-it being already grayed some, will still look white but will have this intentional look of being just a tad darker, and shadows will be less prominent on it.

or you can go with a more brilliant color-color. Do something outstanding. in which case I'd consider very well whether I should go big or go home..sometimes accents do work, sometimes they look forced unless really highlighting something. And obviously-it should be a color you love.

And it should work with your steps, obviously. And other flooring. And overall concept.

Ammonite looks good (even though doesn't come across as greige, on my monitor? greiges are warmer, usually)-meaning your steps are cooler gray? how you'd describe the stone?

Smth like deep teal could be very cool. If you're going to hang a lot of art-color can be amazing backdrop to it.

Thanks for the input. Yes I see what you’re saying about the white April! And I think you’re probably right that something that’s not a pure stark white might be a good idea. The front of the house is SE facing so it gets quite a lot of morning sun (when it’s sunny, that is). I was also considering Strong White, which seems to have a bit of a tiny but definitely looks white in comparison to other colours. Pic below of all three for reference (SW referring to strong white, CW referring to Cornforth White, A is Ammonite.

I'd choose between Strong white and Ammonite.

but listen you're in the space..while I am not. You know it, I don't. you see how it changes with light, I don't.

look at them for a day. Full day. Usually 24 hours of extreme commitment and staring work.

Unless you decide to check out a strong color option as well. Then it's whole another direction. That might surprize you too, in a good way. But depends on the layout and hundred other things.

So I’ve been messing around with a paint visualizer to see what a darker option could look like. Not an exact colour choice mind, just an idea. Maybe not all 3 walls either. Too gloomy??

For me, it is too gloomy. I like deep, saturated colors, but prefer a little more color.

Very gloomy. I'd go much whiter.

I could see gallery white with that staircase. Let the architecture speak.

Thanks for the input all! That’s a no then to the dark hallway.

What about a dark colour for the main room? Considering either a light/medium gray or possibly something quite dramatic like F&B railings or downpipe. It’s a NW aspect so the light is tricky to pin down for paint as it’s cool in the mornings but warm in the evenings.

Should I keep that space super light as well? A bit concerned about matching whites as the kitchen will be white. The room will have wide plank oak floors when finished and looks like the pic below. Kitchen is warm off-white with a warm marble quartz worktop:

the bigger the space-the harder is to make it dark. I mean-harder to make it intentionally good dark. depending on architecture, style, ceiling height..purpose, obviously..))

while there are no set rules when comes to colors. your main space kinda whispers to me "born to be lighter"

maybe you can highlight some elements. given you have some distinct ones.

does the kitchen exist already, or will go in the space where the opening currently is, or..?

I suppose finishes will be monochrome, more or less?

(if you worry about lack of dramatic dark element later-don't be. art and furnishings can give you that and much more

cocoyates, what will the tile floors look like? What color? What will the final color of the wood floors be?

What color and style are your furnishings? And finally, what part of the world of your in (because the quality of light is different in different places)?

I would keep considering the dark hall. Of any of your rooms, I'd think the hall is the place for color.
