It looks like you definitely need some smaller furniture for your space, and we think a sofa and one or two chairs might work best. Maybe then you can have a coffee table or ottoman as well?

I'd reconsider the materials for the fireplace re-do. The reclaimed wood is a huge focal point in the room, and the fireplace needs to echo that same theme. White marble tile and white wood would work fine in another room, but they wouldn't pair nicely with the reclaimed wood at all.
What suggestions do you have for comfy furniture? The
furniture we have is over a decade old and purchased for a different
home. It's really too big for the space but we've made it work.

I agree that you need to "downsize" your furniture size. Our current sofa set was purchased at Ballad about 20 years ago, and it's just starting to show some wear. Since this set has lasted so well, I went into their store the other day to look around. We currently have THE BIG SET, and something smaller will be more appropriate in our new house. I went in with the question, "Will something smaller look bitty and silly?" I came out with the answer, "No. A smaller set is still comfortable and looks fine." We won't buy until we get into our new house, but I feel sure that we'll be happy with a smaller sofa set.

Grey stone with a reclaimed wood mantle is what you need for the fireplace. Wall color a greige that was closer to the beige side to pull in the natural elements would be good.

The reclaimed wood niche and the fireplace are really fighting each other. It's unclear which is the focal point, and the materials are not jiving together.

I agree with other poster that white marble and white wood would still clash terribly with the reclaimed wood niche. Do you use the fireplace? You might consider removing it entirely if not. If you keep it, I'd do something very simple, using materials that are similar to your TV niche.

For furnishings, a light, patterned rug, and smaller-scale lighter furniture would look beautiful in your room. Love your floors! Your new rug does not need to go all the way to the sliding door, so you might measure and rethink the size before purchasing.

I'm not so sure about the reclaimed wood wall; it certainly fights with the fireplace. I would remove everything from the mantel and find one or two more rustic pieces that will work with the wood wall. You're right, the curtains have to go. I would think about warm white walls and curtains in a similar color. That will also work better with the wood wall. A rustic wooden mantel will tie in wall, and paint the fireplace the color of the wall, and you should have a much more harmonious scheme. Smaller couches and chairs, with the couch facing the fireplace and TV and chairs on either side, and definitely a lamp or two, overhead lighting is horrible and harsh. I wish the rug were more interesting along the lines of the inspiration photos above, but it does look new. You can definitely keep the doggie!

I was just looking back at your pictures, and I see a little of your kitchen in the background. The crisp white cabinets and crown moulding are really nice, and would definitely work well with the marble and white fireplace you were envisioning.

So, maybe the reclaimed wood niche is the odd one out, and you should rethink that? Style-wise, it seems like quite a departure from your polished, transitional kitchen.

Thanks so much for your comments! I could only load 2 photos on my original post so wanted to include some more so you could see how the room works all together with the kitchen. I had not even been thinking about painting but now am thinking maybe a lighter wall shade would be good. Thank you for the the nice compliments! I wanted to address a few items:

The wood wall - we want to keep it - we built it ourselves from our old fence and love it. When it's lit from above it looks less dark.

The rug- I had it custom made for this room as this is where we all hang out and watch TV and we have kids - I wanted something that was huge and neutral (we have cats and a dog as well so this is very forgiving) and more like carpet than an accent rug. I wanted the gray floor to flow seamlessly into the kitchen to let the eye flow easily from one room to the next. (I actually tried a smaller patterned rug in here but we have a pool and it took a beating).

The fireplace - ack. SO do not like it at all and Ingrid, you are right - there are 2 competing focal points which I don't love. However, we do use it and it's not going to be torn out as I don't think we'll get the ROI for that project - so I have to make it work. Making it white was to tie it into the kitchen. It will likely be a DIY so I have to work with simpler materials (either paint which still leaves me with 12x12 tiles which I don't prefer) or DIY tile like Inoxia Speed Tiles (which I've read reviews of and seem excellent). So if I redo the fireplace - what do you all suggest to make it work with the kitchen?? (And I'm going to clear off the mantel of the trophy and the crock which contains the dog's fetch balls!)

The furniture - the consensus from you all is definitely that we need some new pieces and I agree completely. I like the suggestion of two chairs and sofa. Our challenge (which you can see better in these new pics I think) is that it's open to the kitchen so it's a pathway AND everyone wants to face the TV. I had thought about swivel chairs against the wall but think it will drive me crazy as they'd never be lined up. The challenge in this room is that it's for movie watching. Ideally it would be a large square room but alas it is not. My other rooms are much easier to design!!
