Where did it come from? Pictures are nice, but more context is needed for what seems to be an unremarkable green hosta.

Purchased at Wade & Gatton as "unknown". It isn't "unremarkable" in person. It is very short - maybe 6" - and the leaves are very wavy. The scapes seem REALLY long for the size of the plant - I was hoping that would assist w/ identification, along with the speckled petioles.

back at the turn of the century .... there was a big breeding push for red in the petioles.. and then up into the leaf ..... and many things were named and sold.. because of the genetics ... but otherwise.. they were just a bunch of non descript green plants ... and frankly ... i couldnt.. or was too lazy ... to tell what the buzz was all about. ... but of course.. i had to have them all ... lol ...

there used to be hardcore.. who would be able to tell heritage.. based on the crumby flowers ... [becasue surely it wasnt bred for that flower display... lol] ..... and if i would be forced to guess ... it was some bizarre cross that got some genes into the gene pool ... that they hoped would further red into the plant ... a lot of them were fall blooming plants.. crossed onto spring flowering plants ... and that was the new gene pool ....

and that reminds me why i just didnt care ... red in a hosta leaf.. was one of the stupidest breeding goal i could ever imagine ... it was complete heresy to my mind ... but of course.. all the power to those with said goal ...

For the magnitude of the problem, I assume this hosta leaf would qualify as "small" by leaf show standards, putting it in judging group IV-1 (small, green). Filtering the list of registered hostas gives 412 records in that group. If I had precise leaf measurements I might be able to filter further based on the length to width ratio of that set. Then you could check the registry for those with about 7 veins. (That info isn't part of the show registry database. A fully searchable registration database should be available by this time next year.)

No. I just purchased it. Tag says it was from last years stock. Maybe it will end up being giant. lol

I saw chris last week and asked if he would come by and put us all out of my misery. LOL hoping to setup a time for him to come through and ID everything. I told him i would work in the nursery in exchange for his time (YAY!). he and cynthia are incredibly great people.

We've posed the question: why would you breed a hosta the color of mulch? But a challenge is a challenge, and put a pink flush on the edge of that leaf... Maybe you got something.

actually when the heat dissolves the anthocyanin thats exactly what happens, but its merely a preview of what's possible.
