The Perseids Meteor Shower

This is such a beautiful shower to enjoy. Does anyone else venture out to see it? Our 19th wedding anniversary is on Tuesday and the first time I ever saw a meteor was with my astronomy loving DH while we were driving to Las Vegas to get married.

The night was clear and the sky was stunning with all of it’s beautiful stars. We exited the fwy and found a random dirt road that led out to a field. We parked the car where there was a small hill and a perfect view from our seats. Several meteors were flying through the sky at a time; it was stunning to see.

We were also visited by a police officer who wanted to make sure we were ok. He was really nice about us parking there, but it made us laugh all the same. This year the sky is clear for once so we’ll be celebrating our anniversary by watching this wonderful meteor shower. It’s peaking this weekend so it’s the perfect time to find a really dark light free spot and park.

My mom and I used to lay out under the stars and watch. I'll be thinking of her a lot tonight.

My daughter is in NM right now and living the life of suck. lol I messaged her to tell her she can lay back tonight under the stars and de-stress. Hope the skies are clear there tonight.

Haha writersblock. I wonder if you're like my DH. He gets too bored before his eyes have time to adjust.

Nah, especially since I've known for sure the panther comes out here, I go quietly and wait quite a while, since he may actually appear.

I just got a post that says the Perseid Showers can be viewed on Slooh.com starting 5pm EDT, 2100 GMT. Have no idea if it is worth a look. I am always frustrated by the lack of darkness here on Long Island. And there is a constant haze in warmer months. Our DS saw it many years ago, said it was outstanding.

I saw them about 5 years ago from a beach on St. George Island (FL). Magnificent! We will try to see them (or it?) tonight from our viewing spot on a lake dock. Hope I can stay awake.

We have a thunderstorm brewing (no surprise there) but even with clear skies there is little hope of finding any darkness in the metro Orlando area.

We have had cloud cover unfortunately. I have had the experience of watching it before though. Our house in Oklahoma was a great location for viewing. We had a viewing party one year. We had outdoor lounge chairs and pillows and quilts laid out all around the pool and a clear view of the sky. Great time.

    HAPPY Anniversary!

I started watching when I was young. My best viewing, though, was when I lived on Harbor Island, SC, a tiny ocean front community outside of Beaufort, SC. The sky was incredibly dark out there, with the moon as the only source of light.

I would walk out to the end of the boardwalk, lay flat on my back, and just watch the show. Sometimes, the Milky Way was so bright in that black sky that it defied belief.

    lukkirish, what a sweet memory.

It’s very special to us out here. With our exceptionally dark night skies, the meteor shower is usually breathtaking.

We drove out to Joshua Tree National Park for the show. Unfortunately it looks like smoke where it's supposed to be so I don't know if we will get to see much. About to take a nap so I can stay up past midnight!

LynnNM, where in NM are you located? My daughter is at Ft. Bliss on the NM side. I'm hoping its clear for her tonight and that it will give her a little relaxation.

Well, I’m sorry there is smoke, clouds and light keeping so many from enjoying it. I did see one flash through the sky a couple of nights ago so I know it’s here.

There is a sweet dairy farm about 10 miles north of us that we like to occassionally go to. They have a little store and the cows are out so people can pet them. They’re open till ten, so we plan on going there to park in their lot and we might as well have some fresh home made ice cream cones while we’re there waiting for the show! (What can I say, I’m a cheap date! LOL)

Marcopolo, you have to pay to use that link. :(

So sorry I did not check it throughly. There has to be something offered on the internet. I will look around. The problem for me is the best viewing is 2AM till 4 30 AM., doing my best sleeping then.

NASA has a live feed on the NASA meteor watch facebook page. I looked up live feed Perseid Meteor shower and saw that info. Starts at 9 PM. I do not have a facebook account, so will look further.

Clear here. I leave for work at 4:30 am. Maybe I will get up early and see if I can relax and take it in before heading in.

We are in he country and have very dark skies so the views are great. Love watching the meteor showers.

The very best I ever saw however was several times when I was on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific just on the other side of the International Date Line and slightly above the equator. Zero light pollution in early morning when I would get up to run. So very bright you could still see some even when the sun would begin to rise.

Beautiful night here in Central KY so I went out to try and see something. Out front, nothing, neck hurting so I went back inside. Let one of my dogs back in, let him out before I went out front. Let him in and stepped out on the back porch and saw one meteor right away. Tried to stay longer and look but my neck was hurting again.

We saw an awesome show! The place we rented is in the middle of nowhere and has these great hammocks for stargazing. We had a telescope and we were able to see Saturn's rings and Jupiter's moons and I saw the milky way clearly for the first time. The meteors were a bonus!

Too many trees! And 11 is past my bedtime, not in the mood to drive a whole mile to the beach. Hmm, maybe tonight, or are they over now?

We went and saw a few but the show was not nearly as good as I was hoping it would be. :c(.

Bpath - last night was the peak, it will start dying down now, but I’m sure there are still some to see.

Too cloudy here (central Florida) for us to see anything last night. May try again tonight.

We were out from 11-11:45. Saw 4. The night was gorgeous and clear but our viewing capabilities at home left something to be desired. Could only see the sky out on the front yard and had to hold our left hands over the side of our faces to block out the super bright street light. We pooped out on several fronts. Still, my fiance saw his first meteor ever at 65. It's never too late to take in Nature's wonders.

We went out at 1 am Sunday and 1 am Monday. I saw a total of 4 meteors with good show. There were several others that were so small and faint that I could not be sure those existed or was it tricks of my eye. We decided it was not good viewing this time. it may not have been much more than an average night.

On the last night, we did have light pollution or haze in about 1/5 of the sky. A few lightening bugs fired off to break the tedium.

I reminded my wife that 2 days ago, a cougar had been sighted about 3 miles from where we were. After that, I had to be careful because a cough would have sent her scurrying to the car.

Our peak time to see them was between 2-4am. Lucky for me, Carmelita needed to go potty at 3:00am! I made her stay out with me and I saw two shooting stars!! I'm happy I got to see them. I've seen them before in different places and I hope one day to be somewhere with zero light pollution to see them. I see pictures people have taken of the night sky in some of the national parks and the amount of stars is stunning!! I would love to see that.

I am sort of like writersblock. Either that, or I don't have the patience to stay out long enough. Plus, mosquitoes are getting cranked up. Believe it or not, we have panthers here....but I haven't seen one in about ten years. Seeing one would be a plus.

Many years ago, we had to go to west Texas to pick up some horses. I was in awe of the night sky there.

Even though the sky is clear here....and we live out in the country....we are close enough to Houston that we have a lot of light pollution from Houston. We don't see anything compared to what we saw in west Texas.

Reminds me of the John Denver song....and fire in the skkkkkyyyyy......

Yes, I've seen many meteor showers & comets. I have to photoshop them out of my photos. See the little streak to the left, just above the horizon...?

    lukkiirish...thank you!

I also have a story. 2:30am, coming down the mountain pass from a night photo shoot. We were stopped by a sheriff, asked us which bar we'd just come from....:0) Nope....we don't drink....I pointed to the back seat FULL of camera equipment....said shooting the milky way. He looked so disappointed....no easy ticket. He said we had a tail light out, have a good evening. lol

This one has a plane in it...see the choppy streak to the far lower right...?

    last modified: 8 years ago

That’s too funny, so basically photography keeps ya all out of trouble! LOL.

Love the picture, you got the lighting for the tractor perfect. It took me a while to find the plane though. It kind of reminds me of the pictures that we get to find the creatures in. :c)

I’m hoping that you’ll post some pics to share the inside of the house you are or were rehabing. Is that the one you moved into?

Haven't had a clear enough night to bother staying up for about 10 days.

I used to see them regularly when I lived in San Diego County, though; when I was on my way home from work at 8-8:30pm I would crest a hill heading north and would see one directly ahead heading toward the horizon.

lukkiirish....sold the one with the white baseboards and new hickory laminate flooring, I posted about.....when trying to decide if the baseboard should be bright white or off white. It sold the day the flooring went in! (3 weeks total time on the market).

Yes, we moved into the new purchase. It's unfinished, but 9 years old. The deck is rotting, the frig is rusting out/ has hot and cold spots, no door handles on the interior doors. No landscaping. The covered deck has exposed plywood with the bar codes still on it. :0)

    last modified: 8 years ago

Thanks for the upsdate. I heard the market is slowing all over but 3 weeks isn’t too shabby.

Congrats on the new to you house! I know you’re up for that challenge, heck, it’s probably a piece of cake compared to some of the projecs you’ve done. Our house was a fixer when we bought it, It was so much fun redoing the whole thing; I’m a tad jealous. I actually get depressed when I don’t have a project to plan and work on. I will be watching for pics!

It's back, and I saw it last night with one very bright meteor. You can still see it tonight.

We were in Hawaii a year ago at this time at our son’s home. His house was at 2000 ft elevation 40 min from any town. I saw 20 meteors. He passed away May 11 this year.

I’ve tried each night here in the Shenandoah Valley to see the meteors but to no avail. Its raining now and expected to rain a lot the next few days. We have neighbors who don’t understand “ dark sky” lighting so it’s very difficult to see anything. If the storms pass we will drive 8 mi to the Blue Ridge parkway and try there.

I've seen them several times over the years, but I don't have the spunk to stay up late (or get up early) enough to sit vigil anymore. I agree it is a thrill to see them. Sometimes it's many minutes in between sightings and sometimes two or three at a time.

Too cloudy last night, plus I forgot.

I've seen them before. Harder to watch now. I'm supposed to be in bed then.

Wow, I forgot about this thread. I am going out tonight just me and my beloved dear hubby in spirit to watch. Our anniversary is Friday, my first without him so It’s bitter sweet. We have an unusually clear sky tonight though so I’ve taken that as a sign. I’ve already picked a spot about 10 miles from here with low light pollution to park.

I have never seen one. I keep meaning to but I have a fairly early bedtime, I do however scoot outside at any time of the night to see northern lights which blow me away.

    last modified: 6 years ago

Elizabeth, where do you live that you can see the Northern Lights? Feel free not to answer if you don’t want to say!

Nothing but rain here. One time I went to Cherry Springs State Park in north central PA and saw the Milky Way. So cool. I remember seeing Hale Bopp but that is pretty much all my success in viewing the night sky.

Lukki, I hope you see the meteors and feel your husband’s presence.Hugs.

As I was driving home from work at about 8- 8:30pm when I lived in north San Diego county, I would come over a certain rise in the road with a clear view to the north horizon and that is where I would often see one.

    last modified: 6 years ago

I live at the northernmost tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, Northern Lights happen here mostly in the fall after a solar flare. I have seen them huge and flashing and seemingly converging in a spot over my head. We live in a dark skies area. I have had to lean against the house while watching as I lose my equilibrium with that blown away feeling. They are awe inspiring.

I used to watch it every year when my DH and I were still together. I now live in the city and there's too many lights and buildings to see it. It was always beautiful to watch and I always made a wish on every falling-star that I saw. As of right now the wish has not come true but I'm hopeful. If anyone gets a chance to watch Perseids please do so. It is something amazing to see

This is a confirmed meteor sighting, which fell over Ontario (in Dec. 2017) and was captured on the dashboard cameras of many drivers. It was also seen by countless people who happened to be outside and reported that something very bright, just fell from the sky. I never would have thought that a falling meteor would be so visible, on such a sunny day. It would have been even more amazing to see, if it had fallen at night in a rural area!

dedtired - We have good friends who moved to the Coudersport area and Stosh is one of the guides at Cherry Springs State Park. We always hope for good viewing weather when we visit them but so far we've struck out the last three trips. Before the pandemic we had discussed going this month - but that didn't happen either. Sometimes we can see the Perseids from our place in NE PA which is in a relatively dark area.

I copied, then Googled Elizabeth's description of where she lives - CHECK the pics at the link to see what she gets to see. WOW!
