What did you think (or read) was wrong with that placement?

That they need afternoon shade.???

I went ahead and planted the by the shed. Time will tell.

Most clematis will do fine in all day sun. You can get some color fading or bleaching out of the flowers on the striped or barred forms and the pinks/reds but that doesn't really affect the plant.

Typically, you will read that they need their roots shaded but even that is not really a requirement :-) What they prefer is a cool and moist root run and that can be aided by shading the roots with other plantings but is also accomplished by a good layer of mulch around them.
