Dave - I can't answer your question about vrieseas flowering in the northern hemisphere, but I thought you maybe interested to hear what I've found here in my collection in Australia.

Although the main flush of my vrieseas flower in around March and April, there are some plants that also flower throughout the year, and not always the same each year. We're right in the middle of a cold winter right now and I have several foliage vrieseas in flower as well as a couple of the green leaf types.

This may be due to the fact that I'm not a specialist vriesea grower or that I don't have the prime growing conditions for this genus. I grow them on the shady side of my house with my guzmanias under 75% green shade cloth with poly carbonate walls to protect from the cold south west winds.

My Vrieseas bloom mostly in the spring and summer. It may be different at the equator, however. In the tropics, the season for Costa Rica is different from that of Brazil.

i've only bloomed Vriesea splendens indoors: it buds up in may-june.

My Vriesea splendens are blooming right now, but they stay outdoors all year. I did make the mistake of trying to bring a large on inside for display, and I broke off the top tip of the spike. I put it back together in place, but it did not graft back together.
