I don't want to make it worse but at least you are making me feel a little better that I'm not the only one. I hate losing plants. I feel like such a failure.

I planted a Brother Stefan last fall. It started out OK in the spring but it has taken a nose dive and nothing I do is helping.

I also lost a Brother Stephan. Now I'm gun shy on that variety.

Jewel of the Nile is looking so scruffy I'm planning to get rid of it. Dee's Golden Jewel got buried under celandine poppy and shrank to almost nothing, and I don't like it enough to care. Android is trying to recover from a bad reaction to fungicide, but not looking good. Crocodile Socks has been in the ground three or four years, never gotten bigger. It's either dying or going dormant early.

I "lost" Antioch when I realized it was actually Fortuni Aureomarginata. Sorry about that, can't get it to edit.

Don't feel bad about losing the occasional plant. Sometimes no matter what you do they fail to thrive. If they insist on dying, it just makes room for a new hosta.

I lost a Cherish also, about 2 years ago. Seems to be a fussy little thing.

I have a Blue Angel that's pitiful..3 leaves and 2 are flat on the ground..I didn't bother to walk over to really look at it..I have lots of other healthy Blue Angels..

Fragrant Bouquet and Katie Q never came up this Spring. My Gosan Sunproof got crown rot, and despite me treating it, is coming out of Summer really weak. I also lost my little Dust Devil. Other than that, it's been a fortunate year as far as lost plants go.

I've been on a mission to take up all my hostas and replant in gopher bags or surrounded by hardware cloth as the chipmunks are simply out of control. I was slow getting to a small-ish Blue Angel and it virtually vanished overnight. I pulled and potted what little was left but so far no recovery in sight. Freaking varmints. Brother Stefan looking bad but I got to it in time. Several Tiara varieties gone but other than the Emerald's I didn't much care, sorry Tiara lovers. They ate all my Junes last year- they were the first victims which I replaced in gopher bags. So far they've ignored my larger more established hostas and I sure hope that continues.

After the loss of a couple of dogs we were dogless for 10 months and that's when the chipmunks moved in. I got a couple of (fabulous) new dogs both of whom are highly motivated to kill critters and while it still bothers me I now let them have at it. I don't really wish the critters dead, I just wish they would get the memo and go somewhere else.

I lost Ocean Isle. It had struggled for five years. I finally thought I had it in the right spot and it had a better year last year and then it didn't come up at all this year.

Some hosta came up smaller. I have voles. This summer the varmints multiplied and dug holes everywhere. We are treating but no success so far. I am expecting many more losses:( I will be heading to the dollar store for those baskets soon but there is no way I will be able to save them all. I will just do what I can.

Whirlwind struggled last summer so I reset the planting depth, she looked good this spring but died by mid summer, not sure what happened, maybe was in too dry of a location.

obviously.... dead is dead ....

but we are differentiating with summer dormancy from improper watering???

There is something comforting about knowing other people have hosta failures, too, lol.

Currently in my Hosta ICU, (dug up and potted):
Enterprise -- too soon to tell but not looking hopeful
Fireworks -- has a few new leaves, tiny but not giving up
Autumn Frost -- also a few new small leaves, hanging in there
Dark Star -- went into early dormancy in July, then started getting water when I extended the sprinkler. I didn't want it to rot so I potted it up. Time will tell if I made the right call.

Last year's ICU hostas that overwintered:
Orange Star -- RIP
Marilyn Monroe -- left ICU in the spring and is happily growing in her new home.
Captain's Adventure -- Also left ICU and looks stable living next door to Marilyn. (Who wouldn't be happy living next to MM? :)

Some of you gave me a really good chuckle! For that, I thank you! And I know you're right, Don. I've certainly lost other plants throughout my gardening lifetime. For some reason, the hostas just seem to hurt a little more.

This summer was uber hot and dry for me. Hostas did have rough time. I did not have any hostas I lost this summer but few went into TLC pots. New Pinani Splash looked iffy on arrival, sat doing nothing and started deteriorating. Still alive and putting new growth now, we will see what next year brings.

Iris Frazier was single eyed slip of a plant and arrived into hot weather as well as Flemish Gold which was 4 eyed plant but developed some form of rot and deteriorated roots fast. Now 4 separate pots regrowing roots back.

Out of plants in the ground Playmate planted last year seems to be going into early dormancy for no reason. I did not dig it up but poked around and roots look ok.

This summer has been so brutally hot. My hostas in more sun really need lots of water and still I got some browning due to the hot sun and relentless hot spells. It's been in the 90's and upper 80's for many days. I bought 2 Brother Stefan last year and planted them in a lot of dappled shade--so far so good. I've had problems with Midnight in the Oasis. Mine are both getting lots of brown on the leaves. My Orange Stars are doing better than Orange Marmalade.

Over the winter I lost Sea Gulf Stream, Game Boy and World Cup - all new plantings and Amos is barely hanging on. This year I've only lost Beauty Substance. A very small piece of crown that quickly rotted away when I went on vacation. I did have to rescue several other new ones from rot - Ambrosia, Cloudburst, Foxfire Palm Sunday, Heartache, Lunar Sea and Robin Hood.

I lost two gorgeous 7 year old Sum and Substance to Southern Blight in early June. It still hurts to think about that loss!! The other hostas that died from SB were just "whatever" hostas but those Sum and Substance hostas were real beauties.

Oh, Mary, one is bad enough, but two? Awful.

I lost Golden Tiara. The new family of bunnies took her down fast. :/ at least they're cute.

Arghh! I hate bunnies! They used to be cute.... now they’re just destructive rodents. Same with chipmunks... they undermine patios, driveways, retaining walls....

2 varieties of varmits (spellcheck telling me I misspelled that - 60 years I've been mispronouncing varmints! No - they are not of the mint family, they will always be varmits, gosh dang it.) have exploded in population this year in my area - chipmunks and rabbits. I have re-located (use your imagination as to what re-locate may mean) 45 chipmunks this year. I actually had someone take 3 of them live - she wanted them!! A chipmunk gnawed a hole in my car's fuel line. Another chipmunk was found dead in the engine compartment by a mechanic after the chipmunk got caught by the ac belt which knocked the belt off. Someone asked me what I have against chipmunks. Did I mention there were FORTY FIVE of them? And I live in an urban area on a city lot. They dig holes everywhere and make an awful chirping noise all day long. Other than that they are kind of cute and my porch cats love watching them.

Gardencool, after reading your post I now wonder if chipmunks are to blame for all the large chunks of wood missing from my cedar deck this year!

Wow windymess at least I only have squirrels and they dig a bit but not enough to kill the hostas. The early spring here was up into the mid 70's and just when we thought the nice weather would actually be on time (silly Wisconsinites) we got hit with hard Frost for several days. I think many plants suffered. My Stained Glass, very large and healthy last year, barely showed. I also have 3 Jack of Diamonds. I did beautifully and the other two are barely showing. I also had several hostas planted late summer which did not come back at all including Sunset grooves, Wide Brim, Dream Queen, Rasberry Sundae and So Sweet. Oh well, what's a gardener to do?
