The Japanese don't eat the red shiso raw. They usually pickle it or cook it. They use the green shiso raw for salads and such. You can try it raw in a salad, and see if you like the taste. I've never grown, nor eaten shiso.

I grow the green version (shiso), use it to accompany Japanese dishes. It's a nice foliage plant.
