Is purple perilla really edible?

I got one some years back, it’s a really frilly, dark burgundy color.

Since that one plant, I just let it seed where it will, and pull up any I don’t want. Visitors to the garden always think it's coleus. I THINK the person I got it from said it was a Japanese version that was used for sushi.

I don’t eat sushi, but before I start adding this to my salads, IS it actually edible? Thank you.
