The best way to support and train the spike is when they start forming.

Keep the Phal facing in the same direction at all times. As the spike begins to grow, put a stake down firmly into the mix and slowly train the spike by wrapping the spike softly with some twine. As grows, continue to use twine to train the spike the way you want. It you want it to grow straight up keep tying as it grows. I like a natural curve so only tie to a certain point. Don't allow it to grow longer without support or you will snap it. Remember, always keep the pot facing in the same direction!!!

I like soft twine to do the training and always leave a little space, don't tie tightly.

When the spike starts to form buds, you can remove the twine (I tie it in soft knots), and replace the twine with some fancy clips or just twist ties as the spike is finished growing.

I've done this for years and its sort of a obsession with me. I love a perfect spike (or spikes). Just makes for a beautiful presentation.
