Edie, the air roots look dry. Mist them every other day in between watering. If the pot has no holes, then water in the pot carefully.

So eventually I’ll remove the bit of bark that’s left & just keep squeezing the roots back in after I’m sure they’re wet & as pliable as I can get them?

I think the bark has been crumbling as the roots squeeze it, and washing out the drain holes. I haven't taken mine out since I put it in bark. I'm afraid I'll never get it back into the pot. I probably should do it to make sure there's no rot in the center. Harvey, what do you think?

If the bark is composting then it needs to be repotted. The roots needs some airspace in the pot. The picture looks like the bark is fresh. If so it is OK. Plant looks healthy with good roots and root tips.

Edie you might need it to be repotted. If you never have done that it is best if someone can show you in person the first time.

I have repotted before, but never a solid mass of roots like this. I've been leaving it alone and hoping it will just keep going like Nick's pot in pot plants.
