counter-stool conundrum

I've fallen in love w these counter stools (see below)

Mimosa Cottage Fabric Counter Stool · More Info

but they are super pricey (about 650 PER stool!). I ve been scouring the internet and haven't found anything i like... would love a link to any you found that you think would look good in my kitchen.. i need COUNTER height and like an off white but soft gray may work as well (will coordinate well with the SS fridge maybe). I like the distressed wood style but only in light wood.. and the shair must swivel and have some sort of back so the kids don't topple right off. My style is modern but w kids it's never REALLY modern-looking right? ..ha!

Get over it! Ridiculous price and they don't fit your kitchen.

Ok ok, people, i get that the one i love is too bulky. Did anyone have suggestions?

There isn’t enough overhang for seating. Nix it entirely. Add some shallow storage to the island back.

Beth N. — you cant tell abt the overhand due to the angle of the pics but theres almost 2ft which is plenty for our knees ;). Did you have any suggestions abt which color/style or, even better, a specific barstool you think wd look good here? Love to hear your opinion. Thank you.

Between all the stuff and the glare off the fridge, I can't even see the kitchen.

I'm confused because the seats you like don't look modern to me. Look for modern stools at Room and Board, Crate barrel, Design within Reach (Pricey). Not sure very many modern stools will swivel. Brands: Kartel, gus Modern, Bludot. good Luck!

Lovely spot to connect with your kids. Take a quick look at the stools on the Houzz shop dept.

Ive scoured pier1, z-gallerie, rooms to go, ashley, city furniture, hayneedle, overstock (yech), and the houzz shop. No luck. Thats why i was hoping someone wd have a resource for me or a specific stool they think will meah well here. Doesnt matter what my style is classified as really.

Try Kirklands - they have a lot of styles and with kids you don't want to spend a ton.

If there is almost 24” of overhang, then you have a Safety Hazard. You cannot cantilever that much off of a 24” deep cabinet no matter how much steel is under that. That’s a see saw just waiting to come crashing down. Don’t allow anyone to get near it until that is corrected.

alright what about these? any ideas re: color? The off white makes me nervous w kids... but i am sick of black and dark colors (hence replacing the black barstools i have currently)

there is 24" on this overhang? 24" straight out, not across? can you take a pic from the side? I want to see this 2' hangover w/no supports.

are your cabs a linen white or white wash? the lighter one would match better. not sure of the wood base though.

Beth-- wow you picked some great ones there.. thx-- although hard to find swivel in a modern style... my cabs are french antique-ish, they're off white, not white. I think the dark wood base (of the last ones i posted) sticks out a little though.. hence the trouble finding stools w "gray-wash" or off-white-wash" (is that a word?). I like the last one you posted best-- now if it could magically come in a swivel i wd be all set.. sigh

Why does it need to swivel? It will add bulk to any stool.

agree. Are you sure that's 24" overhang? I just don't see it.

I think you should take some time off from chair shopping, and use that time you've been spending on the internet to declutter your kitchen. You could buy the most perfect chairs in the universe, but they'll be overshadowed by the clutter. Your kitchen is pretty and should be allowed to shine.

Um ok. Getting chastised for the clutter in my kitchen and the glare on my fridge when im asking about stool styles. It seems like some people need pristine perspective before they can honor us with an opinion. Use your imagination. Pretend my home stays as clean as yours! Yes you CAN! I believe in you!

Re: the number of inches on the overhang. Again missing the point. I currently have barstools there that we use. There are no patellar issues I guarantee you, enough said.

I was asking about *style* options for barstools. Its like asking about a good paint color and someone comments “but wait!!! Hey your roof is crooked!!!” We are sorely missing the point, people. I mean by a mile. Seems like more than a bit of insecurity showing up on here. Very sad.

Houzz used to be different. I can see that helpful spirit is long gone and replied with pettiness. Anyway, thx to all who replied, regardless.

no I can't pretend. You couldn't even be bothered to close the dishwasher to take the photo. If cleanliness isn't your thing, then anything off-white will be a disaster in short time.

Well. We see what we see. You are forcing a heavy stool into a spot that won't take one. Mix the materials and forget ALL about soft white in a swivel. Forget about white washed gray too. Metal will feel lighter than wood in any tone or color. Try more like this from your 'UGH" overstock.com. Counter and bar height available

PS If you want folks to focus on the problem? Take away the distractions : ) It takes five seconds to close a dishwasher door and another five to clear a counter. Sorry........what do YOU see in your photo? I saw the DW first.

Did you look at grandin road, west elm, affordable seating, design within reach? What is your budget?

With so little countertop overhang, using it as a bar would be awkward.

Have you considered having your cabinet maker come back and add an additional countertop to your island just below the existing one, creating a multi-level island bar?

One image I saw recently was with a curved cut thick glass shelf being used as the bar on the family room side of the bar; however that cabinet had a pair of angled side pieces supporting it. This site has 12 pictures and multiple rows of thumbnail pics above that glass bar.

    http://shmuddlebuddies.com/2-level-kitchen-island/multi-level-kitchen-island-designs-with-2-islands-for-12/

If you already have the chairs, your cabinet maker could add the additional level to accommodate their height or, you could choose the height first -- higher or lower than the original countertop -- and then try to find appropriate sized chairs.

Sue..75 so sorry you lack imagination. Such a sorrow. Maybe you will grow out of it but sheesh it doesnt sound like you really can. Here's an option for you-- don't comment on the pics that are not up to par for you. Might take some work honey.

Jan Thx this is what I needed (re: metal suggestion etc). But (re: the second part of your comment) are you abs sure youre a pro. Your comments are not very professional. Wow "it takes five seconds to.....” Do your clients actually let you talk to them that way? Maybe you’re imagining everyone is fully mobile and able to do everything youre able to. Maybe you never came across a person who needed help day to day because of a mobility issue. Please think before you post. Insensitivity takes no brains (see sue..75's comments above for reference), sensitivity however, takes a bit of neurons to accomplish. Amazing what people behave like behind the shield of anonymity on the web! What a shame.

"a person who needed help day to day because of a mobility issue"

If you or someone in your family has mobility issues, then we need to re-think the entire idea of bar counter chairs.

I have a friend with mobility issues. Her kitchen and her home are absolutely clutter-free. It would be dangerous for her to have stuff all over the place, and an open DW door as she could trip so easily, or have to dig for something under a pile and not be able to do it.

Your response to the comments about your clutter indicate a high sensitivity. It gives the the feeling this isn't the first time you've had comments about clutter. Most people would have responded "oh, I had the kids home and it got to be a mess", or "work's been crazy, normally it's cleaner", or something like that. You've been pretty knee-jerk.

Friedajune I didn't respond in [that way] because I don't need to explain myself. My responses indicate nothing more than what I wrote... Which I see you erroneously construed. Seems you were misled unintentionally.

Now I am confused. You mentioned help day to day and a mobility issue. So you were saying that, but don't have that? This thread is getting too uncomfortable for me.

Frieda I understand why you're so confused... let me explain it you a little "cleaner".. ------What type of barstool do you think will look good here.---- That was all I was asking --I am not asking for architectural, physics, janitorial, or ADA help

Again, personal and obviously prejudiced on a person who was asking if anyone can suggest a type of barstool. The responses have been "no we can't help you unless you're mobile enough to clean up spic n span before you take any pics." Surprising but then not so surprising. Closing off notifications for this innocent thread gone awry. Peace.

I think swivel is great for kids so they don’t drag chairs around, but...they will bonk the sides of the chairs as they swivel (ask me how I know...). We had beige microfiber and it held up pretty well with little kids for quite awhile. Good luck.

I would love to see you warm up the space a little with some wood tones. These Bentwood stools from Ballard come in a weathered oak that I would love in your kitchen. Unfortunately, they don’t swivel, but so pretty anyway :)
