A way to tell if it's still alive is to gently bend the back end, where it looks like an accordion. If it is stiff and doesn't flex, likely dead. The darkness of the low part of the 'accordion' section is worrying though.

If you're bringing it inside, put it in a separate cage, because instead of a butterfly an ichneumon wasp could come out. They're not aggressive to humans, but will start trying to implant eggs into any other caterpillars in the same cage. (which is OK because it hasn't mated yet, so no viable eggs, but not fun to watch/try to get it out.) Other possible parasites are chalcid wasps and tachnid flies.

I hope none of those have infected your chrysalis, but I always play it safe if I bring one in from outside.

Oh my goodness Weed, it doesn't sound like something I want to watch emerge. I did put it in a separate container and yes the back end did flex so it might not be dead. I think it's best to let it finish outside away from the butterfly garden because that's where I found it and wouldn't want it to mingle with the butterflys. I thought it might be some exotic thing because it looked so different that's why I brought it in. Thanks for that information.

Well I'd leave it in the container in the shade, just in case it's a butterfly. That way it's protected from predators while it hardens off its wings.
