Is macrame making a comeback?

Why am I drawn to this on the Pottery Barn website? What kind of decor would this go with? It's not cheap. There is a DIY tutorial on YouTube, but I wonder if the cost of purchasing this much cotton yarn would be about equal to the purchase price.

I think it's made a comeback and may actually be on the way OUT again at this point. I saw macramé wall hangings for sale at Michael's the other day, and once a trend reaches those big box stores and is no longer the darling of Etsy, well ... you know how it goes.

That said, who cares if it's in or out, if you like it? I like it very much, but I was boho before boho was cool, making lots of macramé creations back in the groovy 1970s. I made an enormous pair of plant hangers for my parents' sunken living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and they used them for a number of years. I wish I had still had some of the things I made back in the day.

If you can tie knots, you can make your own. The one you posted from PB is actually pretty basic as these things go, and I certainly wouldn't spend a lot of $$ on it. Make your own! It's fun! (At least that's how I remember it.)

I think this wallhanging is rather fabulous. Reminds me a bit of Native American regalia.

I love macrame and have been seeing quite a bit of it. I think it works with a mid mod vibe as well as an eclectic, boho sort of look.

I looked up the cost of the rope that she used and it came to $91.00, less than half of the cost of the piece.

The original price is $199, but it's on sale now for $159.

I'd be careful using macrame as more than a plant hanger. It kind of works against the brick, but doesn't rise to the level of high craft in my estimation. In junior high I had belts that looked like that so I bet it is not difficult to do and must be cheaper to make than purchase.

I'd look on Etsy-many interesting pieces both vintage and new

not neccessarily macrame, but more complicated weavings etc. Textile art.

the prices will be better too, in general. for more skilled, personal work

The macrame plant hanger I made for my grandmother hung in her kitchen window for 15 years. I loved doing it and am thinking of starting up again.

I think we started seeing some macrame items about 2 years ago. The Pottery Barn one looks like a Boy Scout knot merit badge project! ;-)

Yes I believe it is currently very in and as IdaClaire said, probably on its way out rapidly. I suspect you're drawn to it because it's a different / unique choice for wall decoration. It's not the same old generic art we've been seeing for so long and as long as you don't have emotional "that's dated" reaction then it's new and interesting.

If you love it, buy it. Or find a more affordable alternative. It's quite nice looking.

It's also big - Overall: 52" wide x 2" deep x 70" high . I've looked at a few on Etsy, and what is described as large there is half the size of the PB one. It looks nice against that brick wall, which may be part of the appeal.
