Hi again! Well, I dug the daylilies in question up and this is what I found. I'm thinking voles?

It does look like something had been dining on it. So far, knock on wood, I have not had problems with voles, but that would be my guess.

There should easily be enough roots there for them to recover. Hopefully, someone can help you in getting rid of the voles. I am surprised I don't have them. I understand that if you have moles, voles move into their old tunnels. I have moles, I have caught some, and my cats catch them, but I still find them.

We have pine voles. We don't have experience with meadow voles. Pine voles spend most of their time underground. Look around the daylily for a small hole. If you find one, take the hose and insert it into the hole and really flood the tunnel (until it collapses). They will often drown. We also put rat bait down the holes, but you have to be careful if you have pets that might get the poison.

The year we had the terrible drought (2012) was the worst year for us for voles. During the winter they ate about 70 newly planted daylilies. They haven't been that bad since.

Your daylily should recover. They are most devastating for the newly planted ones. They usually don't eat enough of the big clumps to kill them.
