thank you! Yes, I thought of that too. Those plants can go crazy! I have a nice large are that is very bare and I thought a trumpet vine would do well there. Thank you for the advice :-)

I've worked on a country club property in the past where a trumpet vine planted against a multi-story 1920's era mansion that had the size and aspect of a hotel needed to be gotten off the roof every year. It having grown all the way up the face of the building, been starting to grow horizontally across the top.

Woody climbers (lianas) of this nature are built for germinating on the ground inside a forest and growing up into the canopy high overhead.

Consider instead trumpet honeysuckle, Lonicera sempervirens, which is a large vine that has tubular flowers in shades of red, orange, or yellow, but doesn’t have the difficult-to-control tendency to sucker overly enthusiastically and seems to be far less likely to damage buildings, etc. IME L. sempervirens has a longer blooming period (several months longer from the plants observed in my area) than trumpet vine, Campsis radicans.

Nay! We had a trumpet vine at a previous residence. It was like the vines in Jumanji, growing into the soffits and into an attic vent. It propagated all over the yard (even crossing concrete) and even roundup wouldn’t kill it. Even if you prune it regularly, it spreads everywhere. It is banned some places, for good reason.

Choose a different vine and save yourself a lot of heartache.
