DIY Family Room on a Budget Reveal Before/After Pics

My husband and I are experienced DIYers who've taken on renovating our entire little 80s home, inside and out. The family room was a cold, dark, dreary space we never spent time in. We had a small budget for this room....we were only doing cosmetic updates, and saving money by reusing furniture. We bought all new furniture for our living room upstairs and sent all the old stuff to the basement. We sold the old basement furniture and used the money to help pay for the renos here. The only furniture I added was the teal chair, a c-table and the coffee table. We also added accessories and new flooring in the entire basement. We gave the wood stove presence by adding stacked stone to the corner behind it and changing the shape and tile of the pad it sits on. The basement and room is now bright, cozy and just feels happier. This has become a room we actually use and enjoy.

As usual, we realize this won't be everyones cup of tea here, as we all have different tastes and likes. It fits our personalities and style and we love it. This post is to show what you can do on your own if you don't have access to a very large budget, contractors and designers- but do have access to determination, imagination and are willing to do most of the work yourself.

So beautiful - thanks for showing what can be done on a smaller budget but it sure doesn't seem like a small budget. You have a great decorating talent.

Very nicely done. See what happens when you use your head. May I suggest something? On the left side, instead of making it a straight line you should make it scattered like in the picture I have provided. I just love the way it looks so much better. You can still do it. It will just be a little more difficult since you need to do smaller pieces. But with patience it can be done. Would look even better. You can even do it on the right side around the window. Instead of looking cheap modern, it will look more custom.

You're right, everyone has different tastes, but it's undeniably a huge transformation and win, especially working on a budget. Considering you reused the furniture and media unit I think you did a GREAT job designing around those elements. It's not easy to look at a dark and dreary room and know exactly what it needs, but you've done a stellar job. And bonus points for using plants.

I love how you re-worked the fireplace. You took something outdated and made it an interesting, attractive feature. It's probably my favorite component in the room. Nice work!

I would not change a thing looks so nice..a staggered look would not look right in your setting maybe in a more rustic home or log cabin..you did it right..only suggestion I have is to remove the book cases and bridge over your TV... keep it simple.

I’m impressed! You have great taste and talent!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the sweet comments on what we've done. I have no plans to change anything as we've got it just how we want it, and its perfect for our needs and style. =) The staggered stone idea would be great, but we like the clean lines we have on the edges of the stone. Cool idea for a more rustic space though! The 2 wood stoves we have are not just ornamental....they get a workout in the winters here. We have more pics of our home renos in my profile activity if anyone wants to see more of this house we've been fixing up. We have 3 rooms to go yet...master bath, laundry/mudroom and a back entrance, as well as some of the exterior & landscaping. We've made some amazing changes to how this place looked and functioned originally. We went from very dated and dark, to modern, bright and comfortable in this little 80s built house. We are literally have forest out our back door in western Canada, so have tried to use some more modern rustic touches that work with our surroundings and where we live, so we use alot of wood, stone, plants and lots of texture to give it an earthy vibe.

That rug....drool. Where did you find that beauty?
Judi- the rug is from Wayfair :) it's not high end by any means but works great for our family room!

You are creating a beautiful home. Great work!

Wow, looks great! I especially love the wood stove area.

The overall look is vastly improved, you've done a wonderful job. My only caveat is the TV wall, which looks too busy for a room that has a busy (although very nice) rug. I would streamline that wall extensively, and consider doing something different in the hallway where there are the three round objects. I would also eliminate the pouf by the chair, and reconsider the vertical row of pictures, which might look better placed horizontally in the hall. This is all minor stuff, the new look is awesome!

Great work, you should be proud, mostly of knowing what you want and getting it :)

Is that brick wallpaper or actual bricks or what?! It's an amazing transformation.

Hu200- it's real stacked stone panels ;) we got it from Home Depot. Its pretty good bang for your buck if you can install it yourself. The stone we've added to feature walls in the house have really added that wow factor which always gets people excited when they walk in and see it.

Fabulous work! Nice update! Thanks for sharing!

the name of the rug from Wayfair is Caffey Cerulean Blue/Taupe Area Rug by Anderson Mills. it's not an expensive rug but has worn well. the blue color in it is a bit chameleon like as it can tend toward either teal or blue, depending on what accents you use in the room. ours blends perfectly with the teal/aqua accents we used.
