Kitchen floor plan - thoughts please!
Know there are some really wise thinkers out there when it comes to Kitchen design and layout.. wanted to get some gut reactions about the floor plan we got from our cabinetry maker. Appreciate all your help in advance!!
A few other helpful pieces of information:
- there's a window about the sink
- fireplace is a free-floating, double-sided gas fireplace. On the other side of the fireplace is the living room
- sliding glass doors and windows are along the right - we live on a lake so there's a lot of traffic in and out of those doors
- the three windows along the top of the drawing are high - probably 4.5 feet or so off the ground (our first floor is more of a walk-out basement/partially in-ground)
- I do not like kitchen sinks in islands :) not for me... this is usually the one part of my kitchen that is cluttered (I hand-wash many things - knives, pans, etc.)
- I cook and bake often
- appliances will be standard sizes, but going to get a counter-depth fridge
- cannot remove the wall behind the fridge and pantry - that's where our boiler / washer dryer / etc. is located
Other noteworthy items:
- I'm having a really hard time envisioning a stand-alone island in the middle of the room - seems weird for it to not have counters around it but the space is narrow and we will be entertaining at times so a large island to congregate would be nice
- eventually (in 5-10 years) we may add on to the back of the house where the sliding glass doors are, where the kitchen table/dining area will be
- we currently have a round kitchen table we were going to re-locate to a nearby room for when we do need to sit at the table (we rarely sit down at the table to eat and don't want to hold space for a table that we won't have forever)

What is the width of the kitchen proper? The red line.

Excellent. A couple more questions. What is the width of the wall from the corner to the slider trim? red line.
If that wall is less than 30", would you be willing to change to a smaller slider to be able to have a better kitchen layout?
Since you cook and bake often, would you prefer to have wall ovens+cooktop instead of a range?

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoQuick thought--make the sink window larger, then move the DW to the other side, so that it is not in your prep space.
I'd use the table for now, then if you expand, add the island later.

My thought was that with a wider window, you could center the sink, and then keep dishes in uppers on the top wall, but you could put the sink at the right side of the window:
