Fiddle Lead Fig Help Please!!

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi Everyone. I've been reading through many MANY the threads here on Ficus lyrata/fiddle leaf figs but need some more specific help. I have grown many plants over the years but I am new to Ficus. I have a rather large one that was given to me as a gift in early summer (June) in New York city. I should have repotted it then but didn't. I wanted to change all the soil to the gritty type soil this week but I just read how the experts here recommend against repotting right before it starts to go into winter time, however some of leaves are starting to droop with some yellowing on the bottom leaves and black buds/tiny sprouts of black leaves coming from the stems so I definitely want to get it into a pot with better drainage for wintertime. (What are those black small leaves coming off the stems?). I saw experts here reccommending a ballast to help with drainage correct? I saw a pot for sale that has built-in elevated drainage grate, would it be ok to use that and fill it in with fresh soil mix to hold the tree over until spring time? Then in the spring replace all the soil with the gritty mix. I attached photos of my tree and the pot I am thinking of getting. .Can anyone gives my tips to improve it's health? I just ordered the fertilizer that was recommended here. Thank you so much for any advice you can send my way. I really want this plant to do well. Thank you in advance.
