Hey Dutch. I tried the same experiment in both my garlic and beet beds. The collards, cilantro, spinach, arugula, and lettuce are doing just fine, but the Zucchini is probably not going to produce. It was a big beautiful plant before a vine borer got into it this past week. Now the middle of the plant is wilted revealing a few small squash.

These is hope for your squash…next week forecast high are in the mid 70s. I don't know about you, but the 90s in September were too hot for me.

When are you planning on planting your garlic this fall?

ben, I would have had zukes already had I planted them, but I am always plagued by vine borers with that species of squash; so I generally plant butternuts. Since I have little space, I go with short vined types like Butterbush, which has set a couple that are still real green, of course. But they can be used as summer squash. That is what tromboncino is, a summer squash version of a long necked butternut.

I am planning to set my garlics early mid October, depending on when I give up on some of my late plantings. Right now we are facing a week of rain, so I am not likely to get back out in the garden for more than a little bit at a time this week. That puts me a bit behind where I want to be.

The extreme heat of a couple of weekends ago did in the Butterbush, and the couple of melons that actually set are not going to make anything; so much for them. Decent daikons though. Late carrots and some of the other radishes didn't do jack and the turnips never came up at all. Looks like I need to do some rethinking about the late planting. Real disappointed in the turnips; I wanted some of the yellows for this fall, and this is the first time Tokyo Cross failed for me, although I usually plant those in the spring.
