Rearranging living room

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi there fellow houzzers!!So I have a dilemma. We moved into this house 2 years ago and I still haven't fixed it up. I thought we would buy new furniture but we had a mishap of unforseen expenses and have not been able to afford it. ( we just had new flooring done)
Soooooo now I'm looking to make my home homey working with I have. ( which is not much, not to mention out of style) hahaha!! I can also use a little help with pai t for the wall. I was thinking agreeable gay or revere pewter.
As you can see I'm trying to go with a mix rustic chic. Hope y'all can help a sis out. Photos in comments

Can you post a better pic on how you last arranged sofa, from a distance so we can see entire space

Hi- this is for the sofa placement.

First take a look at the front door. Imagine a walkway from the front door and into the kitchen. Everything in your path (yellow cabinet, for example), is moved out of that path.

You want to see that path free and clear of any furniture. Anything that sticks out in this path is in the way and needs to get moved.

Now, imagine that you are walking in the front door and you step into the room a couple of feet. If you put your right hand out, you should be able to touch the BACK of sectional sofa with the blue pillows. Now the blue pillows would face the old wall where the bookcase used to be.

Irene - the sofa was turned 180 degrees, but is hugging the walkway from the front door that leads directly to the kitchen & fireplace room. That is, its blocking traffic.

Goluscombe, I believe the sofa was only turned 90°. Jessica, turn the sofa to face the bookcase wall. Put the yellow console where the bookcase was. Make sure you have space behind the sofa to walk and open the door.

Are we all saying the same thing in different ways? I think this is the correct orientation of the sofa, it just needs to scoot to the left a bit.

No we aren't all saying the same thing in different ways.

The sofa in bejesbride's photo needs to be rotated 180 degrees, and moved (1) about 4-5 feet away from the bookcase wall (2). about 2 feet away from the front window.

The blue pillows need to be facing the bookcase wall.

In the previous comments somebody had advised to place the slipper chairs and the yellow cabinet in the fireplace room. Should I move it back?

goluscombe - if the sofa is rotated 180', 2 feet from the front window I don't think she'll be able to open her front door.

Ok. Moved it to face the bookcase wall, but I feel like there's not enough room between the table and the sofa.

Side note: Jessica - you're awesome for moving all this stuff around and posting photos :-)

Umm. I think you need to reconsider this

You need about 2-3 feet from the table for a chair to be moved out. 2 feet is a little too tight in my opinion. Do you have that much space for the table?

Also, what happens when you 'lose' the chaise part of the sofa? Will there be enough space?

I mentioned it upthread, but... since you're working with what you have... you could move the dining set to the fireplace area and dedicate the whole front room to being a family/TV room.

@benjesbride haha!Haha! Thanks..gives me something to do until the hubby get home. That bookcase though, it's not the business. Lol. I don't know why I didnt think of getting rid of it sooner!!

I think your right. Ugh this sectional is just too big, but oooooh so comfy!!

I'm open for ANY advise. I do need to work with what I hhave though...unfortunately :(

I see the bouncer in the corner--you've got much more important things to do than get rid of a bookcase. Your house is cute and just needs some adjustments.

It takes a bit of imagination, but I drew out an idea. I thought if you moved the dining set to the fireplace room, you could move the two chairs and small table into the dining area. you could swag the chandelier over so it's centered on the opening, between the chairs, and above the cabinet.

If a TV remains in the fireplace room, you could move it to the other wall, between the windows so you can see it from the kitchen :-)

Should your sectional go under the window and other part back to the door, just pull it out from the window a bit, it would be easier to move around

    Some inspiration

Put your lovely chairs by the fire with a small table and buy a couple of soft colourful bean bags, the kids will love them

I suggest you can decorate with this artificial leaf, I bought some at this store, it is great!

    You did it!

-put extra large tv (from the loft) on the wall (not fireplace wall/other wall). So, both tv's will be on the same wall, but in separate rooms.

-slipper chairs and dark dining table: it really depends on what your needs are or where they fit. Slipper chairs could go by fireplace, dining set could go in fireplace room. Likely both will not fit.

You will eventually need something larger than the yellow chest for the tv.

Kids and dust, why fuss? [with floor length] -- especially if you paint a soft muted, what about a soft muted aqua? A nice color with crystal accents too. Art that blends to your liking.

One more possible configuration...if it fits.

So I moved everything. My husband come home and didn't like it, he wants a cozy place in the fireplace room.

Soooooo I moved everything back and came up with this....

I'm not too sure about that yellow cabinet. What you yall think?

    Without the yellow

I was afraid your husband would come home and not like the way the sectional was in the front room. Hmmph.

Well, I like this orientation of the sofa much better. I doesn't block the doorway anymore.

I think there's too much furniture in here. I'd take everything out except the sectional, ottoman and TV, putting the leftovers in the front room.

Maybe in the spring you can try the sectional back in the front room. I admit it will be cozy to sink into the sofa next to the fire. A little rough on the neck, but cozy for the rest :-)

I wish yellow could be slightly altered to be softer, with coat of pale wax or chalk paint idk. As it is, the room would have less contrast if wood wine rack were removed [it shows white window/ dark wood/ white window/ dark fp].

Also removing birdhouse piece and what's below it. All those added up detract from your furniture imo…. I guess that means the musical notes too.

I like the yellow cabinet. Can you add that color into the other side of the room? With bright pillows on the sectional

So now that you've moved the slipper chairs and yellow cabinet into the fireplace room, you have zero furniture in the front room. LOL Sometimes dilemmas get worse before they get better. ;-0

What do y'all think? The pictures on the wall will eventually be taken off when I can replace them.

It is better than it was to begin with. I would move the flowered chairs to the front area. No one will sit in them and they are just making it more crowded.

OK, Jessica. The fireplace room looks good. Let's return to your original dilemma: the front room. It's essentially empty. It would be nice for it to provide a welcome sight when you enter the front door. Beyond that though, what would you use the space for? Would you ever have a group of people in there for conversation while others watch TV in the back? Could it be a second TV area? If so, could you stretch the budget for a bit more furniture?

You might consider eventually taking down that wall between the 2 rooms.

CDR I think that wall continues and becomes the stairwell, so might be load bearing. Thus the previous owners created a passthrough between the dining room and the family room instead of removing the wall altogether. Sounds expensive.

The way the header sits, likely. But worth checking into and the pony wall portion potentially removed and verticals replaced with posts.

Just seems all is shoved in front with no purpose to front room.

The front room will make a great formal living and dining space someday. It's pointless to suggest checking into removing a wall when the homeowner's budget is zero. Besides, I'd suggest the pass-through eventually get framed in again.

    "eventually"

CDR - Not sure what your comment above means. It read like you were presently suggesting she checked into it. Sorry if I misunderstood.

It's okay. I was just requoting an excerpt from what I had said, if it was misunderstood.

"You might consider eventually taking down that wall between the 2 rooms."

    No worries.

How much of a budget do you have for new furniture for the front room? You will need several pieces; sofa, coffee table, art work, console, chairs.
