I'm quite familiar with the malm bed and I don't think it's the right bed to make the most of a small space. That footboard takes up floor space not to mention the complaints of people getting bruised from it. Did you read the reviews online by any chance? It's been a while since I read some, but I recall some terrible reviews.

However, if you bought an Ikea mattress... we had a good experience with their latex mattress for my daughter.

Did you consider the brimnes to use as a daybed?

Good thing it meets local code. Ikea makes a $40 narrow desk with glass top. A narrow bookshelf could be mounted on the wall over the desk if the landlord permits. Or use a bookcase headboard instead of the Ikea bed.

what about the bed is bad in terms of people getting bruised? For the one I saw online the online rating was 4.7, which was pretty high.

The side rails and footboard protrude.

We have malm dressers and I love them. I went back and forth for a while on the malm bed (years, in fact), but I've had bed frames that have protruding edges that you either knock your shins on or stub your toe on and I just didn't want to risk it again. Also--this is strange--I fold laundry on our bed and it would annoy me to not be able to put stand close to the bed with my toes under it, kind of like a toekick in a kitchen.

If you haven't read the reviews, I recommend doing so. Regardless of the star rating I think the reviews on the Ikea site reflect the compromises.
