How do you condition the leaves?

Cut the hosta leaves early morning or late afternoon. Soak the whole leaf and stem in room temperature water, face down, overnight.

You certainly used a lot of hosta! Interesting about the vaseline. In future you could submerge the hosta in water for one day. A bit of dishwashing liquid mixed with water would work to clean the leaves. This would give it a clean and natural look.

I learned, at the Ontario Hosta Society meeting last Saturday, that the hosta leaves "breathe" through stomata on their undersides / backs - so when conditioning in water (3 or 4 days) it is important that they be face down so that the undersides are still exposed to the air...just in case you decide to do it again next year.

I have entered hosta competitons before. One day is sufficient to condition a hosta leaf. Maybe 3 or 4 days will make it last longer. Depends how long you want your leaves to look good.

This is a beautiful arrangement! I will have to try this myself.....maybe next year. Or I suppose since we are getting to the end of the season, maybe a trial run now would be a good idea. Will post if I do.
