Hens and chicks can live outdoors, planted in the ground, all year long.

And I would add that they will do much better and actually thrive if planted outside rather than trying to maintain them as a houseplant. They really aren't - they are extremely cold hardy, to at least zone 3, possibly lower.

Plant them in the ground. All they need is decent drainage. Will grow in both sun and quite a lot of shade.

the only issue you might have in MI ... is late winter heave .... if you can get them in the ground soon ... and then later in fall.. mulch them ... they should do just fine ...

and even better if they get buried by snow.. its one of the best insulators there is ...

They can rot, can't they? They're not afraid of cold, but I thought excess moisture was bad. Like leaf cover over winter would be bad? Am I right?

the heave issue is when bare dark soil.. gets heated by winter sun ... and ice crystals cause the soil to pop out smaller late planted plants .. of any kind ...

you would mulch .. to hide the bare earth.. so the sun wont heat it.. causing the heave ...

and i agree.. any mulch .. too deep.. and too gooey ... will suffocate stuff under it ...

you dont even need to mulch the plant.. if you just put a ring of a foot or so of mulch.. on the surrounding soil ...
