This is my first year with fruit in western North Carolina. I'm seeing a fair number of figs with little jet black wormy things sticking out of the eye. They are very small (maybe a cm long) and fall out when disturbed.

I checked my corn, and found the same bug in there, eating away at my corn.

I have googled and googled, and can't figure out what it is! Can anyone help me? I can get a photo when the rain stops, but basically a dull black creature, about a cm long, and about 3 mm around.

Obviously they are plentiful here so I'll need to figure out what to do about them
