As long as my orchids stay outdoors and it's warm out, I'll continue watering them on a frequent basis. But once the temperature drops and they come indoors, I stop watering my nobile completely. Here in Arkansas, my plants usually stay outdoors until around Halloween.

So far, I only have one Dendrobium nobile. I bought it online from someone over in Europe, thinking I was getting a NoID Dendrobium phalaenopis hybrid, but they sent me this one by accident instead. And when I got it, it was folded in half and crammed into an envelope. I was stunned by this at first, but I straightened it out, potted it up, and it began to grow. It also sent out four keikis as well. I love these orchids because they can grow in direct sunlight and are so easy to care for. I've definitely been on the lookout for more varieties.

A long time ago I lived in Eureka Springs, Ark. Are you near there?

Thanks for the advice! I'm up north and we've had so much rain recently I don't remember the last time I've had to water my nobile!

Its been in the 90's every day in Florida. I continue to water as I always have. Some of mine are spiking and in bloom. I am not fertilizing, but I am watering.

Keep watering and you will get more kieki's and less flowers.

Harvey, I missed your mention of Nobiles. I thought you were talking about Dendrobiums in general.

When I grew in NY, I always used Halloween as the cut off on my Nobiles. I got good flowering and a few keikies here and there.

Now, in Florida, I only have three Nobiles, the majority of my Dends are hard cane.

My Nobiles are still finishing growth on their newest canes. I do not cut off water until they finish. Usually falls around the end of October. However, mine grow outdoors and will get rained on. It hasn't affected flowering nor keiki production. I get great blooms (I've posted photos of them in the Gallery yearly). Since winter is the dry season in Florida, the little rain they get hasn't bothered them.

I stop fertilizing in June on all my Dends.

I never knew about cutting back and couldn’t figure out why I am getting keikis, I did stop 2 weeks ago,hopefully it will make a difference.

Some plants, including orchids, need to be threatened in order to flower. It is a survival method. Flowers make seeds. When the plant is growing and not threatened no need of seeds and flowers...Check with other Michigan orchid growers on the proper schedule for cutting back. It needs to be done but timing matters. Even if you are late it is good to know for next year...

Nobile dendrobiums question..... Harvey you are in zone 10b Florida.. or anybody else in this area.. I see you have Nobiles and suggest on cutting back on water. I can do that.... but from what I read it needs to have a cooling period down in the 40s..... how do you accomplish that. I live in Palm Beach County.... on the Intracoastal... I do not think it ever gets to that except in a blue moon....

I do not have any of these kind of orchids at this time, but I think they are one of the most beautiful.... but I do not want to get something that never blooms.
