I would put an area rug in front of the nightstands, but still under the bed. I think a 8x10 rug would be a fine size if the floors were in really bad shape. That will cover most of the floor without being overwhelming.

As far as the rug color/pattern is concerned, I would pick something that's a neutral color with a geometric pattern. I would try to make the bedding the feature of the room to detract attention from the floor.

If you get a 9 by 12 rug, you can vacuum the whole room without changing attachments or bringing in a dust mop as well as the vacuum.
