this door isn't plumb and when there's a glad enclosure next to it, really shows. The glass installer had to call it out and the contractor acts like it's too much to demand that they check the plumbness.

All doors should be plumb and level, or they do not operate properly. Saying this I would just pay a contractor to fix it. Standard door is 6'-8". It looks like it is out of plumb 1/2" in 80" or about 1/16"...

Plumb and square is very much possible and the norm, albeit maybe not by this contractor.

Plumb and level are relative. There are actually two planes for plumb. That can easily be seen in the left side of the house worthy posted. Those windows can be plumb on the sides when looking head on, but no way are they plumb from the sides. Level is still possible, since level is relative to a bubble in the tool and has nothing to do with the position of the rest of the building..

That means if a wall is leaning in or out, plumb can only happen on one plane. The door would still move when open in the direction the lean creates. The door can still be level.

The situation in sindy's picture is simply incorrect installation. Has nothing to do with wall lean in or out. No excuse.

Plumb doors in out of plumb walls are self-closing. Or, possibly, self-opening...

As HandyMac said, in the OP's case, it's poor and inexcusable workmanship, apparently by a builder who doesn't care.

thanks for confirming.... I don't think I can tell him to redo all the doors in the house now.

but what will happen long term with doors not hung plumb and level? I think they are mostly square relative to the door frame but just not to the wall. should I just suck it up or should I ask him to redo it?

the door in the picture is in a new part of the house. the ground isn't sloped.

In the case of the house in the image above, making it plumb would best involve the planting of a certain fruit tree.
