Thank you so much for your help. I also have a small oriental rug to place at the bottom of my stairs. This flooring is tile. I assume I should place an underlay under this one as I think it could slip around. Do you agree and if you do what type of underlay is best? Thank you.

I've always understood that rug pads are preferred, although not all of use them. They serve to protect both the floor and the rug. There's also the safety element they provide - with slippage and what not

If I had a costly oriental or Persian, I would absolutely use a rug pad!

Another thing to consider is that it's recommended to rotate your rugs ever so often so that it wears evenly.

I'd err on the side of caution and get a rug pad. Good Housekeeping concurs, but others, such as artisanbazzarts, would not. You'll have to assess what's best for your rug, floor and home.
