Is there any green at the bottom of the stem if you scrape the bark with your finger nail?

looks like you put in a heavy soil that retains a lot of water and severely over watered.

It it may be too late for this one.

i tried to scrape a good bit. it looks whitish. may be wishful thinking but could it be saved if i cut the trunk?

How much water did you give it? how much larger was the pot it went into? What kind of soil? Pot up or repot? drain holes in the bottom of the pot?

when it was changed to a bigger pot they did put a lot of water. like drenched. we tried to dry it but it’s been a while. it was more than double the size. it does have a drain hole at the bottom. the soul in not sure of the name but it has mainly dirt (it’s not a mix or anything)

Who is "they"? And it should have been planted in a fast draining container soil mix (aka "soil-less mix", as they contain no real soil or dirt). With a proper container potting soil, a thorough watering - flushing the soil until the water runs freely out the drain holes - should have no adverse effect. It is likely the soil was far too water retentive and that lead rapidly to a root rot.

Besides what gardengal added, you should only go up one pot size, especially when using a standard soil.

If the pot was 6”, it should have been repotted into nothing larger then an 8” pot.

Unfortuntely, id say that plant is a goner. This is why people should always ask questions first.
