I water my tulips and garlic in pretty heavily when I plant. My soil is sandy so it doesn't cake up like a clay soil might. The key is how well you are able to handle your soil. Mine even sandy is still too wet and we are slated for another day or so of rain.

My problem is that I have been unable to work up the beds, augmenting and raising them. There simply has not been enough dry for that. Had they been prepared already I would plant on the first dry weather day I got, being careful on how I handle the soil and where I stood. But I have some tilling to do as part of the process; so I will just have to wait.

It looks like we will be getting a dry spell in about a week and then for maybe something like two weeks straight. Hopefully I will get it done then. Parts of Minnesota have had 2 to 3 times the normal September rainfall and it has been continuing into October. It is almost getting to the point that planting will have to happen wet or dry.

Tulips can go in right up until the ground freezes, but some of your other bulbs should have been in perhaps a month already; so I would say plant as soon as you are able now. You can hold out your tulips until last, too; so if you run time short they can go in later.
