Pick one up! They even have Brassavala , very fragrant

I am going back tomorrow,I didn’t see any Brassavala and I really want one,but I will look again ,and I am going to the other Lowe’s in town also.

My problem is that I just picked up someones collection and I am trying to figure out what to do with the extra 17 orchids now.

I saw home depot carrying dendrobium phals! Just make sure to check the roots and crowns though! I wanted one of the dendrobium ohals but they were severely overwatered and beginning to get crown rot from what I saw. I could even tell from the plastic that they watered the orchids from above right into the crowns too

I also saw oncidiums at Kmart! They had tags that had variety names on them and seem to be from Hawaii, check it out! And the plants were under watered in comparison which is at least better than overwatered/rotting :)

Ahh yes, the return of the bag babies. I have quite a few BetterGro orchids, very good price for some pretty neat plants. My Cattleya from Lowe's is getting ready to bloom again, right on schedule. Please post pictures when you pick some up!

I went to the other Lowe’s yesterday and all they had was a few of the mini Phalaenopsis so back to the first one today.

I did go to the 2 Home Depot’s and nothing. I am going to try to get just one today.

Went and picked it up,looks good and on the dry side which is better then being soaked. Now I have to decide on whether to go semi-hydro or keep it in the bark ,and which window (southern or eastern) or under lighting.

Good choice there. Those flowers will fragrant up a room at night. Like vanilla spice ! Nice

Thats good to hear,love fragrant flowers and this one has a spike,hopefully it follows through.

My nodosa hybrid plants take full sun until about 1:00 in the afternoon. This is hot Texas sun. Just be sure to acclimate it slowly, you don’t want to scorch those buds. Is that Yellow Bird? Just noticed today that my plant has several spikes with tiny buds.

I did put it in my southern window just outside of direct sunlight. I figure that I will move it into the the full sun in a week or 2 maybe.

I hadn't been able to find anything except phals in our local Lowe's until recently. The employees have no clue how or when the more uncommon ones get ordered, so I guess it's pretty random. When I see something unusual, I grab it so at least someone somewhere will know they should keep them coming!

That’s what surprised me, I think it’s going on 2 years since I have seen anything other than Phalaenopsis there.

For 2 years in a row, only Lowes has had these in April/May. Not this past year though. I keep checking the 2 HDs and Lowes near me but haven't seen anything. When they have them I buy pretty much one of everything since they are so cheap in comparison to anywhere else I can buy non-phal orchids. I'm going hunting again today - wish me luck!

Locally, those of us that belong to the orchid society have commercial growers offer a presentation to us. Most of the money we raise is for charity but we do spend on our speakers. And they bring plants for sale. Always stuff that the big box never gets. and good prices. A big benefit for belonging to a local club. Are you all non members to an orchid club?

I am a non member but been looking into it.My problem is that it seems that the closest club is an hour away and I don’t have Facebook either.

I am also a non member. Meetings are on Wednesday nights about an hour from my home and fighting rush hour traffic. I have 2 kids and it's just not a practical option for me. I go to the annual sale and there are lovely vendors but NOT cheap! I'm guessing Florida offers a lot more variety than Massachusetts in the way of orchids. Of the few local sales, it's rare to find anything under $30 - and that includes boring white phals. The only place I've ever found a Brassavola was at Lowes...for $8 Can't beat it!

I am glad that the big boxes are helping. I live in a small town yet we have a lot of interest with a good turnout. The orchid society is really helpful. It is sad to hear the lack of access. I feel that you all would enjoy the opportunity. So unfortunate...But regardless you still do a damn good job with what you have! Maybe if you asked the manager at lowes if they could bring in a speaker from their source....Being an hour from the closest society they could get a big turnout...If you can get that far then ask the manager to do it monthly...
