Invest in an appropriate sized tv stand and move your tv off the mantel for that wall left of the fireplace.

Also, invest in a narrow table to place between your exterior window/wall and your sofa. Then add a tall thin lamp w/medium sized white shade to it.

I like Suezbell's idea. If you are not feeling moving the TV, I would do some floating shelves in one of the darker tones of the floor.

with floating shelves you would put the sofa table piece still on that wall? not really wanting to move the TV since we had to drill through the stone to get it up there. but i guess we would cover the holes from that with whatever we put up there.. which i'm sure i'd run into another dilemma about! hgtv makes this look way easier than it is!

No, I wouldn't do the sofa table piece, necessarily. Draw it out in colorful children's chalk in various layouts, staggered etc. It can make a nice visual piece and you can just put a few decorations on them and the wall looks full and artistic, without overcrowding the room with to much furniture.

Why can't you angle your couch to face the TV/FP? If you do that, things might work a lot better. Get a rug as well and it will help ground things. See how everything is floating in the room in this design of ours? Your couch doesn't have to be at in a square design it can be at an angle to work with the FP. You can get a sofa table to put behind the sofa, and the chair then goes on the wall.
