Design Dilemma Kitchens Living Room

Annoying Kitchen Overhang

I live in a very stock builder grade apartment, with an overhang on the living room side of the kitchen counter. We don't use this space as seating, preferring instead to sit at the dining table. What can I do with this overhang or what can I place under it to increase storage and look halfway decent?

Bookshelves as deep or shallower than the overhang. For books or whatever you want.

One possibility is that you abut your dining table under the overhang, perpendicular to the counter. Even better if it’s a drop leaf or gate leg, so it tucks out of the way when not being used.
