Not certain what you are mopping in the crawl space.

Maybe I’m wording it wrong. Half our basement has normal height ceilings and half are low ( I’m 5,5” and have to duck). The low section is very dusty and has some piles of dust and who knows what. This part opens directly into the part of the basement we use daily.

Crawl spaces in this area normally have dirt floors. I would worry more about any fungi that you would stir up in the dust than any asbestos. If it has not been cleaned for years go to a hardware store. Purchase several facemasks that are for moldy cleaning before you do any cleaning. Read about how to clean this type of area before starting. Other option is to hire a remediation specialist to remove the stuff. If you do not disturb the dust it probably will not cause any problems, It is when it becomes airborne.

If you worried, remove dust by wet mopping the entire crawl space or if you really worried, call asbestos removal company and have them vacuum everything with with a special HEPA vacuum.

Thank you, I feel like my husband will think I’m crazy! Do you thing that removing those floors 4 years ago could have caused much dust to get down there? The subfloor was not removed and is solid boards. i think I will probably wet mop it.

Is there some reason you suspect asbestos? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought asbestos was banned in the late 70's?? If your house was built in 1981, I wouldn't be concerned with asbestos.

The production of Asbestos-filled products (for N. American consumers) was halted in 1982. The companies were then allowed to sell off old stock (grandfathered stock) until the mid/late 1980's. It was lead based paint that was eliminated in 1978,

A house built in 1981 would have a minimum amount of asbestos product in it naturally. By the time your home was being built, a tremendous amount of product was available without asbestos. The non-asbestos based products were newer looking. More fashionable, and often were used simply because they were a newer looking product.

It is possible that some asbestos was used in the building of the home. It was more likely seen in the adhesive for vinyl tiles (cut back adhesive) rather than finishing items. Again, the industry already knew about the issues with asbestos and they were already making arrangements to use other product.

Thank you. I have been looking for a company that does the dust samples just for complete piece of mind... though I am starting to think it is probably not necessary. Do you know of s companynthat does it that quick?

Update- I sent a dust sample in for piece of mind and it actually tested positive. We have a local restoration company coming to look tomorrow. I am panicking right now. The area tested was not an area with foot traffic but it opens into the portion of the basement we use multiple times a day and have for almost a year and a half now ( when we moved in) for laundry/ storage/ wood stove). my kids don’t go down there, but I’m scarred what we have tracked upstairs, or brought up with boxes ect.

Could wall off he part you think is dangerous.be sure to put a door in in case you needed to go in there for repairs. That way your family could go up & down several times a day with no worries!

Wall off the bad section, have a door that goes to it if repairs are needed but then your kids can go up & down without worrying about them!
