I would wait until early spring, before bud break, to transplant your Celeste. Then give it a hard pruning once in its new home, to reduce the top, balancing it with the roots, which certainly will be reduced through transplanting. Fig trees are very resilient and forgiving.

Are you planning to provide winter protection for your Celeste? Celeste is a Southern variety. Your winter is too harsh on an unprotected tree for it to thrive for you. Even Chicago Hardy will need winter protection in your zone.

Alternatively, your Celeste, depending on its size, may be grown pot cultured. If you can get the majority of its root mass into a pot, I would suggest pot culture. In my case, a 15 gallon pot is too large to move easily. I find 10 gallon pots to work best for me.

One last point.....Does the Celeste grow and fruit in the zone 7 garden of the current owner? A 5 year old fig tree should be producing a crop. How does the current owner get the Celeste through the winter?

He is in zone7a and cuts it heavily in in the winter and had it comes back successfully and produced lots of really sweet figs. The tree was in ground for 5 years. actual age would be 7. I do not have the blessing of Zone 7 or the guts to leave it alone in winter so I am going to provide winter protection. I have two pot figs and want to try a ground growing one.

Yes many stories . Grandma was a big influence early on. Dad also used to bring home many from the Italian club of different types mostly black because we both preferred them over the light types .
