Spring is fun, hitting the nurseries, bringing home lots of goodies, full of optimism. Summer is for seeing my plantings fill out, fighting off pests, tweaking, replacing poor performers, and water water water. Fall is for accepting that some did well, some did not, cleaning up, taking cuttings, winding down, taking stock. Winter is for resting, planning, thinking about spring. I wouldn’t want to miss out on any part, each one makes the others more special. If I had to choose I’d say spring, when it’s cool and fresh, and pleasant to be working outdoors.

Easy. Spring and autumn. Love the cooler temps and the colors.

Fall, because that is when I can safely plant everything that I have been thinking of doing all summer here in SoCal

I live in Chicago and I would have to say summer is the best time of the year for me here. I do agree that we need all the seasons for all the jobs we do as gardeners but there is nothing like summer when all the things I planted and had success are in full bloom. Spring is so wet and worrisome with seedlings getting drowned by showers and frozen from that last blast. Our fall weather is so beautiful but sad when days get shorter and the sun is already down before the work day ends. I don’t like the winter for these are long days with no garden. I am sure it depends on where you live and the work you all do to prepare for the garden and the clean up that follows. Enjoy the fall because winter will be here so soon.

I'd say April through early July -- spring and early summer. Much past 4th of July the "dog days" set in and it's usually hot and miserably humid here, don't feel like doing much of anything and neither do the plants, the garden in general tends to decline July-August. Although now that I'm into vegetable gardening on a much larger scale I do look forward to the good stuff rolling in (fresh fruit off the trees, luscious melons, juicy tomatoes warmed by the hot summer sun...oh my...). I do enjoy fall too, but not on the same scale as spring, but this year it's just passing me by, I"m not getting much done or even feeling like doing much outside. Winter is nice in it's own subtle beauty -- as long as I dress for it, the cold doesn't keep me down in terms of being physically active, although obviously no gardening. The gardening activities I do enjoy in the winter are poring over the seed catalogs (especially in a nice, hot bath...) and plotting and planning for the upcoming year, and seed starting once March rolls around.
