Thanks. Yes, I've read that as well. I have quite a few planted in proximity already...some at least 30 years old. They are hanging in there, but my newer plantings seem to struggle. Now that the hickories are mature, I thought maybe the toxicity was building up. Could just be the voles, or too much . Can't find any info specific to Rhodies and was hoping someone had definitive info or direct experience. They grow so slowly...hard to just watch and wait! Thanks again!

I work on a college campus that has both hickories and rhodies. I will look next week to see if any are in close proximity. I know that there are some quite healthy rhodies in the PJM group that are perhaps 20’-30’ away from one large shagbark, but I will check distances better and see whether I can find other examples.

I took a look for rhodie hickory combos at work. I only found one spot that had both in close proximity. There is about 10-15 feet from the outer drip line of the large shagbark hickory to the rhodie, likely a PJM or one with similar genetics. There were some hickory fallen leaves around the base of the rhodie which looked completely healthy.

Thank you. I guess time will tell. I have a few mature Roseum Elegans (I think) that are now within the drip line of Hickory trees. Trying to figure out if adding more is worth it. All my new planting seem to struggle. I appreciate you taking a look around. Thanks again!

I have several PJM rhododendrons planted within 3’ of a very large shagbark hickory tree. No problems.
