Try uploading a photo of just one leaf. Show a coin next to it for scale.

I'm going to guess that it is a Crepe Myrtle. It's really hard to tell without better photos.

Crepe Myrtle is a good guess. I will upload a pic of a couple of leaves with stem.

there is a website that actually lists all trees in nyc! You type in the address and it identifies the tree. I'll see if I can find the site

This is a great resource, I will be using it a lot!. However, the tree in question is in an inset small park between streets. The site you mentioned has street trees. Thank you so much!

Yes I believe so. Rarely have I seen a tree of such beauty. The trunk is a brandy red, and the leaves are for all to see. Could be a Muskogee. You're right Embothrium, I have not seen flowers even in high summer. But the surrounding buildings are pushing it up to make a beautiful canopy. I have noticed that trees in Manhattan are healthier than in the suburbs, where they are often mouldy and spreading. Thank you.

Serviceberry?

Perhaps not, as the serviceberry leaves are a little more rounded (from a google search, I'm no expert). But I'll be on the lookout for flowers in spring or fruit in summer. Thanks Ann!

The round leaves are on particular species of Amelanchier. However none of them have reddish bark.
