The room is too small to partition, and odd shaped at that (shaped like a stubby 'L'. I'd say being able to separate them is more of a dream than a possibility. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Thanks for the photos - so helpful! I'd also like to know the size of the room and agree that closed shelving may make the room feel larger. It looks like your current shelves go pretty high, but I'd go all the way to the ceiling and make the most of the vertical space in the room.
